Dear JewishGen Community,
While 'surfing' in cyberspace tonight I came accross a *searchable* Statewide Marriage Index for the State of Illinois for the years 1763-1900. It is searchable with either the name of bride *or* groom. It can be searched using only last name. The search will provide: Groom Bride Cnty Date Vol/Page License # The link is: <A HREF="http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives/marriage.html"> Illinois Statewide Marriage Index</A> The URL is: http://www.sos.state.il.us/departments/archives/marriage.html I'm sure this site will be helpful to many. Dear Fellow Genners:
As we welcome the new SephardicSig - I think it is important to point out that in addition to the very accurate points that Ms.Field has already pointed out - Sephardic Jewry has had a very important and very positive influence on Ashkenazic Jewry. Our Shulchan Aruch - the basic code of Jewish law was written by the fifteenth century master Rav Yosef Karo of Sefad, as was scores of other basic Halachic and Philosiphical books that were the foundation of every Ashkenazic Jewish library in Europe for centuries. In later centuries, especially among the Chasidic groups - the influence of such Sephardic greats as eighteenth century Kabalist Reb Chaim Ben Attar the author of the Ohr Hachaim was enormous. Altogether our "Nussach" was heavily influenced by the Kabbalistic teachings of the Sephardic giants. Therefore, not only can we trace our ancestors to Sephardim, we have learned from our "cousins" quite a bit! Part of our understanding of the lifestyleof our ancestors must include the great positive influence of the Sephardic Jewry. Avrumy Heschel Brooklyn, NY MODERATOR NOTE: Please keep further discussion on the topic of genealogy. |
