FULLER/TOBIAS families in Toronto
#general
Gary & Ruth Ross <evieross@...>
Dear helpful genners:
I am looking for anyone who might know (or have known, since they are all dead) the Canadian branch of my gm's family. The original name was FUNT. One brother (name unknown) migrated to Toronto and changed his name to FULLER. He had 2 children: Edith (b. about 1909) m. David TOBIAS in the early 30's. They had one child, a son named Norman (b. about 1935), who was a talented bassoonist with a symphony orchestra in Ontario. Norman married a ballerina with the National Ballet of Canada, but they subsequently divorced. He then remarried, but both he and his pregnant wife were killed in a freak automobile accident sometime around 1964-65. David TOBIAS remarried a woman named Gwen and attended my youngest daughter's Bat Mitzvah in 1983, but we lost track of him after that. Sidney FULLER served in World War II (we think in the American army, but can't understand how a Canadian could do that). After the war, he lived in NYC, working on a German dictionary. He lived with a couple and a scandal ensued when he fooled around with the wife and the husband denounced him as a Communist to HUAC. Sidney FULLER fled the U.S. and my mother had to sign an affidavit so he could return (this occurred in about 1950). He remained in Europe (Germany, I think) where he married a German woman and died childless in the fifties. The New York Times index carries no news about this scandal (too racy for the staid paper), but my cousin recalls it being covered by the Daily News or the New York Post. The posting of the NY Post archives on the web in Nov. 2001 is encouraging for genners who use the internet. Otherwise, I will have to go to the NY Public Library to look at archives for both tabloids if they have them. Anyway, is there a genner in Toronto who might remember this family or members of this family? Any help would be appreciated. It's not easy to get vital records >from Canada unless you are a close relative. Also, I know I can look on the St. Albans list for people who crossed from Canada into the US, but are there records for immigrants crossing >from the US into Canada? FUNT/FULLER would have made the crossing about 1908, I surmise. Thanks in advance. You are a generous and kind group of people who have gone out your way to help in the past. I am indebted to you. Rav Zvi Pesach FRANK/ Rav Arye LEVIN

Harold Greenberg <greenhar@...>
Dear George, shalom-
I have written you privately about the connection between the Levin, Shapira and Frank families. Zvi Pesach Frank was the chief rabbi of Jerusalem >from 1936 on. His brother-in-law was Rabbi Aryeh Levin, rabbi of the Jewish prisoners during the British mandate in Palestine. If you research Aryeh Levin by looking in the Encyclopaedia Judaica you will have trouble finding him - this saintly rabbi was of such modesty that the editors forgot about him - this oversight was corrected in the 1973 Year Book. His biography, "A tzaddik in our time" by Simcha Raz, is available in English translation. Zvi Greenberg Eilat, Israel greenhar@...

Auschwitz survivors in Munich
#general
Lancy
Dear fellow genners,
I have found photographs of several relatives who survived Auschwitz and were living in Munich since the end of WWII and up to 1948, waiting to emigrate to the U.S. Does anybody know if Auschwitz survivors were living in Munich in an organized community or in a transitory camp? If so, would there be records anywhere of such a community, its members and when and how they dispersed? Any ideas will be welcome. Descent from Rashi - less likely
#general
Yaron Rotman <yarotman@...>
An article in Avotaynu is said to have proven that with a very high
probability all ashkenazy jews are descended >from Rashi (as well as all his contemporaries). Without having read the article, this would have to rely on the assumption that there was a uniform distribution of the likelihood of marriage among all possible ashkenazy couples. However, offspring of prominent rabbinical figures were more likely to marry children of a similiar descent. Also, these children were themselves more likely to hold rabbinical positions, thus propagating the dynasty. These trends would tend to cause stratification (although not absolute) of the jewish population and thus reduce the likelihood that all ashkenazy are created equal (-: BTW, my family obviously claims a descent >from Rashi ... Sally, I did not speak of any descent version but of a special list of ascendants (through BALLIN and TREVES families) I think you do a comment but have not seen this list. If you or anybody have the opportunity to look at it, and if you are able to see an error, please let me know, I am interested. I thank in advance.
