A good place to look for WWII German Jewish Refugees is on the website of
the Kitchener Camp, Richborough Transit Camp, Sandwich, Kent at  https://kitchenercamp.co.uk/
I used this website to find information for a friend who lives in Sydney, Australia.

Search for/get the marriage license record from the NYC Muni Archives. The license unlike the record from the health department asks for the details of the divorce, ie the where and when. Since she was admitting to having been married before (some said first no matter what) the clerk would have require proof of the divorce to issue the license. If you get lucky there is even a copy of the decree attached to the license.

My grandmother, Lillie LIFSHITZ, married Murray FITZER in 1923 in New York County, New York.  ... Divorce records are private for 100 years, but  there are index cards in  the archives of New York County for plaintiffs and defendants, and there is no record for Murray FITZER v Lillie FITZER, (and no records under LIFSHITZ).  There are no records in any of the other boroughs of New York City.  I wrote to the county in Nevada where Reno is located because I know some New Yorkers went there, but they do not have any records either.  Is it possible my grandmother only had a Jewish divorce, and was still able to remarry?

The UK Government kept a card index for Enemy Aliens in 1939-1940. You can search and read these cards free of charge on the computers at the National Archive in Kew but they are also available on line through the subscription service Find My Past.

You will need to subscribe to Find My Past to read some UK government records, just as one has to subscribe to ancestry.com to see many of the USA government records.

Many of the Enemy Alien cards  show the date of detention  and of eventual release or deportation.

Anyone resident in UK in September 1939 is likely also to be listed on the 1939 Register. Bear in mind when searching on line data bases that some German Jews might be listed on the Gwermany Nazi census of May 1939, and again on the UK September 1939 Register,  if, in the interim, they had  emigrated to UK.

Could it be Chernovitsi Romania, now part of Ukraine? I have aunts and uncles who were born there- From the web:
"Chernivtsi is a city in Southwestern Ukraine. It is situated on the upper course of the Prut River, and is the administrative center of Chernivtsi Oblast, which includes the Ukrainian part of Bukovina." and also"After being designated the capital of the new Habsburg crown province of Bucovina in 1849, Czernowitz enjoyed several decades of development, a process stimulated by the economic and political emancipation of Jews, which was completed after 1867."
Good luck.

Binyamin, I stand corrected. Thank you.
It is my explanation which is the convoluted one - and clearly not correct in view of way the groom's patronymic is recorded.
As you say, the solution is to inspect the original document.
I have sent for UK marriage authorisations and have to the best of my recollection received a scan of the original document together with the transcript.

My grandmother, Lillie LIFSHITZ, married Murray FITZER in 1923 in New York County, New York.  They were both living in New York County prior to the marriage.  In 1928 she married my grandfather, Abe SOLOMON.  The marriage certificate said her first marriage ended in divorce.  Between 1923 and 1928 my grandmother lived in New York County, New York.

My father was interned in the Isle of Man in 1940, as were almost all German and Italian men of military age, after a German U-boat had sunk a British ship with an enormous loss of life, and public opinion hardened. He was only released after my mother had obtained a visa for emigration to a South American country.  We didn't take it up, and he found work instead, since conscription left vacancies which people like him could fill. . Many German refugees found such niches and made a success of their lives - see Dr Anna Nyburg's recent book 'The clothes on our backs' about refugees' innovations in the clothing industry

Have you read the FAQ page on JewishGen for the JOWBR? I would suggest always going to the source for the information on how the database is structured and how to submit changes.

It was not all 'doom and gloom'. Read https://www.bnaibrith.org/past-magazine-articles/imprisoned-on-the-isle-of-man-jewish-refugees-classified-as-enemy-aliens for a more enlightened account.

Have you tried the Apps for iPad from Ancestry and MyHeritage? You are directly connected to your trees online. Useful for sharing trees, updates, searches for hints, but I don’t know about capacities of exporting and printing.

Cukierman family, emigrating in 1951 #poland #usa

csicher@...

Perhaps someone on the list can suggest ways of tracing further the family of Wolf Cukierman, born ca. 1926, most likely in Wolbrum, Poland. The Joint archives record the arrival in New York  on 26 Feb. 1951 of Wolf and three other family members: Mania (b. 1925), Dora (b. 1947), and Ester (b. 1949).Their emigration location is given as Landsberg Kaserne Bl. 4/58; their destination was 128 Boylston, Malden, Massachusetts. (Two siblings of a diffeerent Wolf Cukierman (1920-42) emigrated to the United States: David, 1830-84, died in Texas; Szmul, his wife Fajga (20.9.19) and son Anszen (27.5.46) emigrated to Canada in July 1951.) I've searched the major genealogical sites as well as Jewish Records Indexing-Poland and JewishGen.

How to correct error in JGOWBR? #records

m.rind@...

I have found an erroneous entry in the JewishGen Online Worldwide Burial Registry. How can I get it corrected?

The erroneous entry is this one: https://www.jewishgen.org/databases/cemetery/jowbr.php?rec=J_AUSTRIA_0158266

It gives the name of the deceased as "Wolf Wilheim." The name of the deceased is actually "Adolf [not Wolf] Willheim [not Wilheim], per the record in the IKG-Wien Totenbuch that is clearly the source of this entry: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-81KF-LBM

Also, the IKG-Wien record includes the date and place of birth: 6 May 1855 in "Namiest, Č.S.R." (now Náměšť nad Oslavou, Třebíč District, Vysočina Region, Czech Republic). I would like to get this information added to the JewishGen record.

It depends on the census taker and how they conducted the interview. Some of my "boarders" were in-laws, cousins, nephews, nieces. Keep an open mind and YES search for them as well. The "boarder" search sometimes gave me information my direct line did not, such as town of birth, naturalization papers, etc. Chances are, the boarder was someone know by the head of household or spouse and came from the same town or village.
Good luck to you and happy hunting!

Re: German Jews incarcerated in England/Scotland during WW2 #holocaust #germany

Hi from Paris,
May I add that same situation occurred in France.
As soon as UK & France declared state of war on September 3rd, German and Austrian citizens were considered as citizens of a foe.
They had to registered and were interned in various camps across country.
Phony war lasted till May 1940 with start of Blitzkrieg and France's invasion.
So from September 1939 to May 1940, these camps were ruled by French Republic and were only administrative detention camps with light discipline (direct testimonies of my family's men).
Jews had quickly opportunity to enroll French Foreign Legion or groups of foreign workers (if too old).
As they were German or Austrian (as my Galizianer GF & GU), most of them were sent to Algeria (a French department at the time) in order not to be in situation to fight against German Wehrmacht.
And most of them were discharged from service without any fight during summer 1940 in non occupied southern part of France.
Last but not the least : among non Jewish German and Austrian internees, a lot were Nazi's opponents who were in France since 1933 or 1938.
Republic government denied to free them in June 1940 just before defeat.
After armistice, Petain agreed to let nazi teams visit camps, in occupied (northern) and in non occupied (southern) zones : these teams sorted opponents and abducted them to Germany. You can imagine their fate.

Re: US Census #usa

I tried searching google for this address: 36 Pasqet Drive, Norwalk CT
Nothing showed up.
I did pull up the 1950 census. The address is 36 Pequot Drive, Norwalk CT
Did a google search for 36 Pequot Drive, Norwalk CT.

https://www.google.com/search?q=36+Pequot+Drive%2C+Norwalk+CT&safe=active&rlz=1C1GCEU_enUS1010US1010&ei=je2sYtGjHbuekPIP_IKryAI&ved=0ahUKEwiRnpDesrX4AhU7D0QIHXzBCikQ4dUDCA8&uact=5&oq=36+Pequot+Drive%2C+Norwalk+CT&gs_lcp=Cgdnd3Mtd2l6EAM6BAghEApKBAhBGAFKBAhGGABQvANY-SJg-iZoAXAAeACAAecDiAG6C5IBBzEuNi40LTGYAQCgAQHAAQE&sclient=gws-wiz

You can dig around there and see if anything looks familiar.

Also, in my experience, some houses were torn down to make way for freeways, parks, etc.
The other thing I have found, in handwriting, sometimes that 6 looked like a 6, but it was really a 0 or some other number. In this case the 6 is clearly written, but the street was misinterpreted.

i followed the link for Berlin, and found Address Books before there were telephones.  My wife's name Dembitzer occurs 38 times, including a 1912 and a 1922 address book.  It is also possible that before individual ownership phones in an apt buildings' lobby were listed for all occupants.

Re: US Census #usa

Norwalk land records are online at https://www.norwalkct.org/163/Land-Records. It may be necessary to install some software that is compatible with the database. Instructions are provided.

You may have to slog through a lot of similar streets and names until you find the right house, assuming it is still standing.  If you are near Norwalk, or if someone is willing to search in person for you, visit the Norwalk city hall, where you should be able to search by owner name, even past owners.

For those who may not know, CT has no county governments and all land is incorporated, so land records are kept by individual towns and cities. Not every town puts their records online.
