As I keep on reiterating, that law is still on the books, in the Rhode Island General Laws, though I forget the statute number. Judith Romney Wegner Providence, RI

Where is Punidel?
#general
James Morzillo <jmorzil1@...>
I was most fortunate and happy to recently meet my second cousin once
removed, (my 2nd cousin's grandfather and my great grandmother were siblings). He said that his father came >from a town called Punidel believed to be near Grodno, but I cannot find it even on the most detailed maps. Can anyone help me find its location? Did the town's name change at some point in time? Was it destroyed? There is another researcher listed in the JGFF for this town, but their e-mail address is not current. Forced name change in Westphalia
#general
Stephen G. Esrati <stevsta@...>
My GG Grandfather, Simon Levy, resisted the Prussians about changing his
name >from Levy, which the authorities viewed as a Jewish first name. My second cousin, Gerhard Sonder, researched the matter and reported as follows: "The name-change story goes something like this. In 1806, Napoleon occupied Westphalia and made it a kingdom under his brother, Jerome. French laws of emancipation, precipitated by the French Revolution, were applied to the Jewish inhabitants, and they were required to adopt a surname (family name) by 1807. "Simon Levy refused to comply and still had not changed his last name which, because it was a "Jewish First Name," did not meet the requirements for a family name. In 1815, the area again came under Prussian governance; the requirement to adopt an appropriate last name persisted. "Simon kept up the battle until he was told on 25 April 1846 to select an appropriate, new family name within ten days or he would be fined 10 Taler. On May 18th, Simon agreed that he and his family had selected the name LEWIN." Others in my family did obey. The family name Gottschalk was adopted in 1808 when Jews in the Rhineland had to adopt family names. The D=FCsseldorf state archives list the following name adoptions: Elias Gottschalk remained Elias Gottschalk His daughter Keile became Cornelia Gottschalk His son Feis became Philippe Gottschalk His son Laib became Louis Gottschalk His daughter Jedle became Jeanette Gottschalk His son Gumbrich became Gdofroi Gottschalk His son Chaim became Germain Gottschalk The name also appears as Godschalk Stephen G. Esrati Seeking MEIER/MEYER (Frankfurt/O or Berlin), GRUENEBERG (Schoenlanke or Berlin), HIRSCH (Dortmund and Berlin), WILDER (Horton or Leeds), COHEN (Manchester), SKULSKY/MORRIS (York or Leeds) Shaker Heights, OH
