POLISH/UKRAINIAN RELATIVES #general

Joyce Eastman <wldwoman@...>

After receiving a copy of my paternal grandparents' civil marriage
certificate as well as the death certificate for my paternal grandfather
from the Austrian Archives in Vienna, my research now continues regarding my
paternal greatgrandparents. Their names are as follows:

HONIG, Abraham Josef
WILDER, Scheindel
HELFER, Judes
ZINKER, Aron

All of the above are probably >from Brody, Poland (Ukraine) or surrounding
towns.

I am also searching for siblings of my paternal grandparents:

WILDER, Salomon Wolf (born Nov. 3 1878, died Dec. 20, 1914 in Vienna,
Austria of tuberculosis)
HELFER, Sime Bruche (aka Berta ZINKER-HELFER)(born Oct. 9. 1880, executed
in the woods of Maly Trostinets on September 19, 1942)

both were born in Brody, Poland (Ukraine)

Please contact me privately if you have any information concerning my
relatives.

New Names - GOLDENHIRSH, FINKELSHTEIN, LOTKEN, SINGMAN #general

Diane Jacobs <kingart@...>

As there are very few Singman surnames in the
NYC area to research and because three women
in my family have the name Rebecca or Becky, I
am inviting anyone who may recognize the following
marriage certificate to get in touch with me.

I found at the Municipal Archives in Manhattan the
following marriage certificate dated l893:

Becky Singman age 21 to Dawid ? Goldenhirsh,age 24
both now residing at 393 Bushing St. , Brooklyn.
Becky's father is Wolf Singman, 73 Ludlow St. Manhattan
Her mother: Aige Finekshtein
Dawid's father is Simcha or Simeon Goldenhirst, 73 Ludlow
His mother is Mindel Lotken
All are >from Russia

I am not sure of the groom's first name as the ink quill goes
in and out and it is very difficult to read. I do have a possible
William Singman as the family story goes who died in the l890s
of TB, a painter. He could be the brother or elder son of my
greatgrandfather Yehuda Schumkav (Julius Singman in NY).
So I was intrigued when I found Wolf Singman as the bride's
father. I do not know of any of the siblings of my greatgrand
father, but I know his mother, daughter and granddaughter were
named Becky or Rebecca. So it is possible that a brother of his
would also name a child Becky.

If any of these four surnames are familiar to anyone, please
let me know.

Certificate of Arrival #general

IsraelP <zach4v6@...>

One of the US members of our Pikholz Project Team reports:

Also I learned that under the "Naturalization Act of June 29, 1906," it
required the issuance of a "Certificate of Arrival" for aliens filing a
Declaration of Intention. This paper was NOT given to the person but
kept by the government agency.
I have never heard mention of this document nor have I seen it
included with other documents ordered. Is it useful or just
duplicated information? If the former, how do we get at it?

I don't know what criteria is used during a Soundex match but I wonder
if it is possible to create a "closeness index" that is user controlled
(with a standard default). The tradeoff is using the exact spelling and
possibly missing something that is a slight variant or using Soundex and
getting buried under with hits that miss the mark by a mile. I assume
most people start with the exact option and then rerun their search with
Soundex.
Any thoughts or comments on whether this is worth the effoort?
My only frustration with the D-M Soundex is that many of the false hits
are names that begin with a different consonant than the name I am
searching. This makes sense given the eastern European linguistic
considerations that led to the invention of D-M Soundex, but much of the
time there is no doubt of the first letter.

The seeming solution is to create a "modified" D-M Soundex that would
work like the NARA Soundex in that it would lock the first letter and
then numerically code the rest of the name. This would take a minimum of
additional programming -- if anyone else but me thinks it's a good idea!
