Rzeszow #galicia

CAROLE401@...

I just received my grandfather's SS-5 application and for the first time, I
read that he lists Rzeszow, Poland as his birth place. The only other way
that I have seen him list anything was Galicia, Austria and his sister
stating Przemysl. But both of these are districts, aren't they? Can anyone
clue me in on what to do next please. Again, I list my GF as LOUIS (LEIB)
ELIAN, his sister as MOLLIE (MALKA) ELIAN, and one brother as SAM (SIMEON)
ELIAN. My gf's date of birth was December 15, 1889. I also only knew that
his parents' name were REUVEN ELIAN and SARAH. Now, the SS-5 says his
mother's full maiden name was BECKIE BEIDES or BERDES, I cannot be sure.
Yet, I wonder if this is an error because my gm's name was BECKIE, or else
SARAH was her Hebrew name. The more I learn, the harder it is to put the
puzzle pieces together. Thank you.

To all of you who have responded to my queries about my late fathers
non-listing on the death index and my late mothers belated application

Jenners,
Have I missed something? The good senator, to my knowledge has never been
photographed wearing a yamulke or hat!! Comparing him with Kissenger
seems a bit unfair. Mr. Kissenger never had his name associated (at least
I never heard of it) with anything Yiddish. I'd appreciate any comments
regarding the aforementioned.

Searching JONAS and HARRIS #usa

Molly Karp <malkahkarp@...>

Hello all,

I am researching Max Jonas, b. ca. 1865. We believe that Max's father served in the civil war, but don't yet know his
name. We do however have a photograph of him with a medal on. Max's wife was Ray Harris, daughter of Marks Mordechai
Harris and Lena bat Zalman Littman.

There was a Jonas family, two brothers, who came to the US ca. about 1840? who founded the Jewish community in Cincinnati.
One brother had five sons in the war, some on each side, and was a friend of President Lincoln. I do not yet know if we are
related to these Jonases.

I have two web addresses for the American Jewish files in Cincinnati:
file://:server.huc.edu/aja. and www.huc.aja. My notes say both are
searchable. The staff will also respond to phone calls (sorry, I have "lost
" the phone number) and letters.

Does anybody out there know anything about the availability of
indexes for the American Israelite newspaper that was started by
Isaac M. Wise in Cincinnati? I was at the American Jewish Archives
once a couple of years ago and remember seeing a big card catalog
with index cards which had some names indexed, but I don't remember
exactly what the index contained and whether it included things like
obituaries, etc. Will the AJA answer queries about names mentioned in
old issues of the Israelite? Are there any projects in the works to
put any index online? That might be a gold mine of information.

Thanks
Rachel

Greetings! I think this is a great idea.

My pre-1850's needs and interests divide by country of origin, rather than
US location. I have a large block of data on Jewish births, marriages and
deaths in HOLLAND >from about 1600 to 1850. Names include BOEKVERKOPER,
EYTINGE, GOUDSMIT, LEON, PHILLIPS, SPIER, and many others. I have spent time
in the Amsterdam archives, belonged for a while to the Nederlands Kring voor
Joodse Genealogie, and would be happy to suggest bibliographic materials in
the Netherlands and in the US. (I still have lots of questions, too!)

In GERMANY I am looking for ADLER >from Allersheim (Bavaria) and BON from
Mühlhausen near Wurzburg. I am also working on COHEN, FAHNBACH, LESSER, and
ROUSE.>from Schwersenze and Rogasen, near Posen (now Poznan in POLAND.

There is a Mormon Family History Center near me; I might be able to help
with look-ups.

Gumbinsky & Krohn in Buffalo #usa

Charles Lippman <cdl@...>

I'm thankful for the startup of this SIG.

My greatgrandparents, Isaac (son of Shraga Feivel) Gumbinsky and Rebecca
(daughter of Baruch) Krohn, came to Buffalo in 1867.

Isaac was preceded by about 22 years by his cousin/uncle (?) Lippman
Gumbinsky. They came >from Suwalki. Family tradition has it that the name
was changed to Gumbinsky >from Gasiorowski while the family was still in
Poland/Lithuania.

Rebecca Krohn came >from Vishtinetz (Vystitis), Lithuania. Many members
of her family came to the US in the 1850s and 60s, most to Buffalo and
Utica. Her father, Baruch, born in Vishtinetz in 1810, came to Buffalo
after his wife Esther's death in 1875. More distant members of the
Gumbinsky and Krohn families are said to have settled in Detroit,
Kalamazoo, and Nebraska.

Selig Adler, in his book about the Jewish community of Buffalo, "From
Ararat to Suburbia," written in the early 1960s, claims that this family
was the first Eastern European Jewish family in Buffalo. When I read
this as a child, I was so turned on to my family history that I began
the research that has excited me for almost 40 years.

But, I still haven't found records of their immigration. I have found
death certificates, citizenship papers (of Isaac in 1876), but no
passenger lists, etc.

If these names sound familiar, or if anyone can advise me about how I
can find immigration records of men (and women) who came >from Lithuania
in about 1867, please let me know. TIA.

STERN/STARR, HERZ, LEVI, HOCHSCHILD, KAUFMANN #usa

Genealicej@...

from Alice Josephs

I am looking for:

STERN/STARR family of Heppenheim an der Bergstrasse,
Hesse-Damstadt, Germany>Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky
Portsmouth, Ohio, USA.
Moses STERN became Moses STARR and during a short life lived
in Carthage, Smith County, Tennessee until 1880.
HERZ family >from Kochendorf, now Bad Friedrichshall,
Baden Wuerttemberg, Germany>New York City.
LEVI family Niederseebach, Alsace>Louisville, Jefferson County,
Kentucky>Portsmouth, Scioto County, Ohio
HOCHSCHILD family Gross-Rohrheim, Hesse, Germany>USA
KAUFMANN Germany (?)>St Louis, Missouri>New York City

The earliest ancestor I can trace who went to the USA is Heimann
STERN (aka Henry STARR) who emigrated to NYC circa 1835. He
apparently travelled with a friend who, it's said, when asked
his name by customs at NYC, panicked and answered "ich vergesse"
(I forget in German). The friend then landed up with the name
"Ferguson". It's a good story, anyway <grin>.
