Lithuania SIG #Lithuania re: KHEMDA #lithuania

Mpcamitta@...

Dear group,
This discussion has fascinated me, as my husband's last name is CAMITTA, a
name that has many spelling variants, including those with the initial letter K, and which in certain configurations might <sound> like KHEMDA. His grandfather was called Camanda as a nickname sometimes. The family shtetl was Mielec, Poland. Any thoughts about this?

Miriam Camitta, Wynnewood, PA

MODERATOR'S NOTE: Although the thread on Khemda as a first name has been closed, this query is slightly different, so please confine any answers to the surname question raised here.

JRI Poland #Poland Disappearance of a town and names on JRI #poland

JUDYJ4060@...

I have been going through old papers in my filing cabinet and came across
some old records >from JRI >from 1998. There was a listing for Database
RAJGROD1 (Rajgrod) Gubernia: Lomza/Province: Bialystok with family names on
it including information about 2 marriages on it. The names are SZUMSKI,
SZUMSKA, SZULMAN. I compared it to the updated newer databases for those
names and that one just seems to have disappeared altogether. I thought that
it might have been consolidated into another Database, but cannot find those
same names together that way. This is an important piece of data for me and
I had obviously put it away for safekeeping. It is also a reminder to review
old information often. Has anyone else had this experience? Where can I
find this information?

Hi,

This probably is a bit in reverse.
German town Lasse (name prior to 1945) is currently known az Lazy, Poland.

There are 30 towns by this name (Lazy) appear in modern Poland geographical
atlas, some of those towns were renamed after WWII, when Poland took
possesion of the western land (Russian have grabbed ex Polish lands in
exchanged).

Lazy is a beach village on the Baltic and Lake Jamno shores, located NNE of
town Koszalin (ex German Koeslin)

Nesvizh Homeowners List #belarus

Meshenberg, Michael J. <mjmeshenberg@...>

This is a copy of a message I posted yesterday to the Nesvizh discussion
group. Some of you may recognize names below and be motivated to participate
in the project. We're hoping this will be the first of many such lists to be
made available for the first time >from the Belarus Archives.

Mike Meshenberg
Belarus SIG
Research Coordinator

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Folks,

I have reviewed a copy of the Nesvizh 1905/06 Homeowners/Real Estate
Possessors list that Oleg Perzashkevich compiled for the Belarus SIG. Our
efforts to raise the $500 needed to obtain the list and upload it to the
fully-searchable All Belarus Database are lagging. So I went through the
1019 names on the list and compared it to the surnames listed on the
Researchers List of the Nesvizh Web pages. There is an amazing correlation.

My intent here is to make a shameless appeal to your self interest. If you
know that there are names you're interested in on Oleg's list, then maybe,
just maybe, you'll be encouraged to contribute to benefit your own and
others' research. All those who've contributed to date have given $25. If
everyone who finds a match sends that amount, or virtually any amount, we'll
easily meet our goal.

Remember, this list is only of the names I know you're researching. Of the
66 people getting this, there are over 30 who's surnames are NOT listed on
the researcher's page. The odds are you'll find yours, too. Here are the
names listed, with my "soundex" interpretation of Oleg's English
transliteration, and some guesses about anglicizing:

Surnames Being Researched On Property Owners List

years that fills a small hole on my tree. You never know . . .
