I believe the only Orthodox Jewish Orphanage in Chicago was the Marks
Nathan Jewish Orphan Home established in 1906 on the Northwest side of
Chicago, moved to Albany Avenue in 1912.
I interpreted the original query to concern the Chicago Orthodox Jewish
Home for the Aged (where my ggf Rachmiel Finkelstein lived before his
death in 1952), not any orphanage. I do have at home a letter on
letterhead >from the Home for the Aged; I seem to remember an Albany
Avenue address.

JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Looking for BERKMANN and SUESSKIN: Königsberg / Terezien #general

Daniel Teichman <106607.620@...>

I try to help a woman who wants to find out more about her father's
family. Her father was born about 1935 and was in Terezienstadt during
the Holocaust. His name is Guenter BERKMANN. His father (or grandfather)
was probably a Shamess in the synagogue in Konigsberg. His mother's
name was SUESSKIN (may also be spelled differently). In Terezienstadt he
was looked after by a woman called Ine NATANOVA, who was a journalist in
Prague after the war.

Who knows anything about the BERKMANN family? Are there any relatives
living anywhere?

Charutz <yairharu@...>

Hi there,

As I had previously suspected, I received a minor barrage of postings, both
privately and through the list, regarding the possible connection between
Scotsmen and Jews.

As a non-expert in the field (my own researches in the field of genealogy
and history over the last few years have been somewhat amateurish and
personal), I do not have the tools to guarantee whether stories that I have
heard are in any way authentic or true.

I do, however, know that names like Gordon and Brodie (Braude, Broide, etc)
are not uncommon, both among Jews and among Scotsmen. I have personally
known people of Scottish extraction by the name of Brodie. I would also
like to remind Michael Bernet of a well-known film of the 1960's called
"The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" (starring Maggie Smith), about a Scottish
"old-maid" school-teacher by the name of Jean Brodie, living in Edinburgh
in the 1930's.

Again, I must emphasize that I do *not* know for sure whether there is a
necessary connection between the Scottish Brodie and the Eastern European
Brody. Any reasonable and logical evidence either way would be welcome.

All the best,
Chaim Charutz.

I would like to know if I were to utilize your services ,and become part
of your database, would I still be able to have access to other
databases? In other words, am I limiting my future prospects for
comparing info to only your database? I have no idea whether my DNA will
reveal a Jewish origin or not; I recognize that your focus is primarily
to help those of Jewish origin. I would like the maximum amount of
possible avenues to new information >from this test,as my efforts have
been stalled and I need a fresh approach!

Thank you,
