call for translators #belarus

Joyce Field <jfield@...>

The Yizkor Book project has gratefully received permission >from Mr.
Nachum Boneh, who is present chairman of the Pinsk society in Israel,
to include several chapters that he wrote on Pinsk and the Holocaust.
The major proportion of the material has been translated >from Hebrew
into English; however, there are around 22 pages that require
translation to English before we can put all of the material online.

It is for this reason that we are approaching you with a request of
assistance. We are looking for someone who can take on this important
project - either to translate or organize the translation by a third
party.

Thanking you in advance.

If you are this person, please contact :

Is this the same town that we used to call in the time of HRM Franz Jozef

Translation #galicia

Peter Jassem <jassep@...>

Dear fellow Galicianers,

The question asked by Ron Smith, ronssmith@..., West Bloomfield,
Michigan is a frequently asked question and I believe I responed to it
before.

It relates to the following letter in Polish:

"Naczelna Dyrekcja Archiwow Panstwowych przesyla w zalaczeniu pismo p.
Ronalda S. Smitha z uprzejma prosba o przeprowadzenie poszukiwan
genealogicznych zgodnie z obowiazujacym trybem. Przeslana oplate wstepna
prosimy odliczyc od koncowego rachunku. Zal.1"

It is a standard letter that each of you will receive >from the Polish State
Archives once you order your search. It is in fact a copy of a letter sent
by the Polish State Archives Head Office to a PSA branch in the geographic
area of your interest saying that they enclose your request together with
the initial fee, which is to be deducted >from the invoice upon completion
of their search.

Dear Fellow Galitzianers,

Abraham Heschel wrote about researching his GGF >from Mosciska, and the
moderator indicated that this town was not on the Shtetl Seeker and asked if
it was even in Galicia.
Microsoft Expedia Maps lists the town as "Mosciska [Mostiska], Lviv, Ukraine"
The URL is: http://maps.expedia.msn.com/ The link is: "http://msn.maps.expedia.com/pub/agent.dll
Click on "Find a Map" > Select "World (topographic maps) > Type in "Mosciska"
in Place Name > scroll down to "find a map" and click.

You will then see selections. Highlight your selection and click on 'Find a Map'
The next page should be a map with your town highlighted.

I have found any number of towns on this site that I and others were unable
to locate in the Shtetl Seeker or other maps.

23 years (1887-1910) as the rabbi of Lomza.
I am looking for any information on Rabbi Malkiel especially before
1887.

He wrote a book of responsa called Divrei Malkiel which is probably
available in any good yeshiva library. The book's introduction *may*
contain some pertinent information.

Stephen T. Falk <sfalk81162@...>

I am trying to find information about my cousin, and hopefully to find
his children or grandchildren, if any.

I just learned that my third cousin Erich KASTAN, born 1898 in Ludwigslust,
Germany, emigrated to the States in 1933. I also learned that he was a
photographer with an Atelier in Hamburg before 1933.

I did not find a reference to him in the Social Security Death Index.

If anyone has heard of this man, I would be interested in any leads.

Thank you,
Stephen Falk

Nasatir in Latvia #latvia

TwinPooks@...

Researching the name NASATIR, NASATYR, or NASATER
(other possible spellings: NASHATIR, NASHATYR, NASTIR, NASATI)
(in Cyrillic it looks like HACATUP)

Has anyone come across the name NASATIR (also note other possible spellings)
in their research in Latvia?

My great-grandfather Morris Nasatir (b. 1864) and his siblings emigrated >from
Lithuania to the US and South Africa in the 1880s. Morris used to say that
he came >from Rokishok (Rokiskis), Lithuania. However, his older brothers
said they were >from Riga, Latvia. We hit a dead end with our research in the
Rokiskis area -- nothing before 1892.

Since Rokiskis is very close to the Latvian border, perhaps they moved before
Morris was born, or while he was a child. Or perhaps people in that area of
Lithuania just said they were >from Riga (but then why the dead end in the
records?).

Thank you.

Matthew Nasatir
