Re: Origin of the word Pitchipoi #general

Shel Bercovich <sbercovich@...>

There was a restaurant by that name in Place St. Catherine, Paris, 3e.
Hope it's still there! Perhaps the restaurateur can tell you why he
gave it that name.

Lew FIELDS #general

papabear@...

According to family rumor, Lew FIELDS' (nee FELDSCHOEN) wife was my
GGM's sister.

About all I've been able to learn in more than 20 years is that my
GGM's name was Ida LEVY and that she was born ca. 1850, possibly in or
around Posen. So, I thought I'd take this somewhat unusual step and
ask if anyone reading this might know anything about Lew Field's wife.
If, in truth, she was my GGM's sister, I might yet be able to add
another piece to this maddening genealogy puzzle.

TIA,

1- Ellie is most likely Eliezer (like Elie Wiesel's given name).
It is as commonly if not more so short for Eliyahu (Elijah).

Ruzhany #yizkorbooks

ETPasadena@...

For the information of anyone out there: I have a yiskor book >from the town
of Ruzhany, which is now in Belarus, formerly called by our family Ruzhnoy,
and in Polish, Rozana. Prior to WW1 it was Russian, then Polish until WW2,
then became part of Russia until the breakup of the USSR. Now Belarus.

It is in Hebrew, printed in Israel in 1957. I had help in translating the
table of contents. We discovered that the last chapter is in Yiddish, and it
has been translated. Very moving and disturbing. Would like to have the
balance translated, but very costly. Is there anyone out there who has
family >from Ruzhany? Our family names are Vegotsky or Vegodsky, and Solomon
(we found many Solomons, no relatives).
