Latvia SIG #Latvia London Telephone Codes #latvia

Arlene Beare <arl@...>

I am exercising my privilege as Moderator to post a non genealogical
message. The London telephone codes have changed and >from the 20th April
there will be a recorded message if you dial the old codes which were 0171
and 0181.
London is now 020 and the old numbers that were 0171 now have the 7 added
to the old telephone number and the 0181 numbers have an 8 added to the
number. Each London number will now be 8 digits as against 7 in the past.

0171 1234567 now becomes 020 71234567
0181 1234567 now becomes 020 81234567

Volunteers Needed - 1891 NY Immigrant Index #general

Howard Relles <rellesh@...>

Volunteers are being sought to help create the Index of 1891 New York
Immigrants >from Austria, Poland, and Galicia. In addition to possibly
uncovering some of your own relatives, this index would increase the
number of immigrants by about 50,000 that our fellow genealogists
world-wide could readily search. Experience with the corresponding 1890
Index (see below) showed that about 1000 names could be indexed in an
8-hour day. Think how fast this could be done with just a few
volunteers!

Access to the 1891 microfilms of ship’s records would be no problem.
They are available at several National Archives branches (Washington,
DC, Pittsfield, MA, New York City, Chicago, and Denver), several large
public libraries (New York City, Jamaica, NY, Boston, Fort Wayne,
Dallas, Houston, Madison WI (Historical Society)), and through any of
the more than 3,500 local LDS Family History Centers around the
world. In addition, although definitely not required, it would be
helpful if you had some computer experience with Microsoft Excel or
other spreadsheet or database program.

Anyone interested in volunteering, please email me at:
rellesh@...

We recently completed the Index of 1890 New York Immigrants from
Austria, Poland, and Galicia. It can be accessed at

Apologies if this message went to the whole group - I assumed that when a
message comes >from an individual and you press "REPLY", that the reply-to
address is the reply of the sender - not the whole group.

Barry

Moderator Note: I apologise also as I should have realised
it was just meant for me and
Barry was just having a little joke.
No harm done as I feel sure that
nobody will really take offence.

Jerry Segal <j.segal@...>

Hey you Jewish Geners, anyone know of a town in Russia, which about 1900 was
called Zvanetz, in the area of Podolsk, Russia. Near the Dniester River?
The name may be different now- I don't have any other information about it.

thanks.
