"For Ten Kilograms of Sugar," >from the Yizkor book of Staszow, Poland, is yet
another of the many accounts in this literature of Jews struggling to survive in the woods while hunted not only by Nazis but also their own neighbors, be they Poles or, in other cases, Ukrainians. The title of this chapter refers to the 10 kilograms of sugar that the Germans paid Poles in and about Staszow for each Jew delivered to them. "The fight against our countrymen was incomparably more difficult than that with the Germans, because the Germans didn't dare to show up alone in the forest, even during the day, without the active assistance of the Poles," wrote Perl Golflus. It was an ordeal that only came to an end when the Russian army liberated the area, prompting Goldflus' father to cry out, ""Children, we are free." Seeking family/descendents of Marcel Berkovici of Haifa 1957
#general
rcbernstein
Hi Everyone,
I'm trying to make contact with any of the family of Marcel Berkovici who lived in Haifa in 1957. He is related to Sol Smulowitz who lived in New York during the 1950s, possibly a cousin or niece/nephew. Sol traveled to Israel several times a year to visit his family and in particular Marcel. Marcel wrote a letter to Sol in October 1957 with the following return address: ** Haifa, Israel (MODERATOR: the street address has been redacted for privacy reasons) If you are related or know anything at all about Marcel's family I would very much appreciate it if you could be in touch with me. I'm doing some genealogical research on behalf of Sol's granddaughter and any info regarding Marcel will help immensely. Thanks and a happy Chanuka to all, Ruvane Bernstein (Beitar, Israel) |

Dear fellow FrenchSIGgers,
We have just received a questionnaire asking us if we wish to schedule a SIG meeting and/or a Sig Luncheon for the Sig at the Warsaw Conference. So far I have only received a couple of confirmed replies to the earlier questionnaire, both >from members in France. Our present membership is 959!!!! Surely there must be others among you who are now planning on attending the Warsaw Conference, perhaps even giving a paper? There is a Dec. 24 deadline for us to request a Meeting or Luncheon. So, if you are planning on attending PLEASE let us know as soon as possible, or the FrenchSIG will have no presence in Warsaw . This would be very sad, as this is a first Eastern European location. And many from Poland eventually relocated in France!Rosanne Leeson Pierre Hahn FrenchSIG Coordinators |

Searching OPPENHEIM, London
#unitedkingdom
Dick Plotz <Dick@...>
My great-grandfather Dr Joseph Isaac Bluestone (1860-1934), who
migrated >from Kalvarija, Lithuania to New York in 1880, was a delegate to the 1903 Zionist Conference in Basel. He wrote in his memoirs that on his way he visited his wife's cousins Max and Isaac OPPENHEIM, probably brothers, in London. Isaac was married to Minnie, and Max was a bookseller. I've tried over the years to identify Max and Isaac in various databases, but have had no luck. OPPENHEIM as a surname and Max and Isaac as given names are too common to be sure that anyone with either name is the right one, and as most Oppenheims are German Jews and not Litvaks, the presumption is against any particular one being the right one. Also, since I'm trying to determine if either brother had a family, and if so, to find living descendants, a simple listing of a name in a directory or membership list is not likely to be very helpful. Dr Bluestone's mother-in-law, my great-great-grandmother Feige Dvora, was a daughter of Louis (probably Leib) Oppenheim of Vishtinetz (now Vistytis). She had a brother David Shlomo in New York and brothers Sholom and Tanchel as well. I don't know whether Max and Isaac were sons of one of these or of another brother whose name I don't know. I would appreciate any leads that might help me identify Max and Isaac Oppenheim, especially if they lead to contacts with living descendants. Dick Plotz Providence RI USA Dick@... FindMyPast Free Access to British and Irish Roots Collection
#unitedkingdom
Jan Meisels Allen
Findmypast has created a "special" collection >from its existing records
called the British and Irish Collection. The intent is to make it easier to search specifically for the immigrant ancestor rather than searching the entire Findmypast database. The collection spans more than 400 years of migration between the British Isles and North America, all in one place, and holds 98 million records. Currently, access to the database is free. No end date was given, but can change at any time. When searching the data base, the results return with an icon of a "page". This indicates it is a transcription of the actual record. When you open the icon, there is an opportunity to view the original source document, however, for most of the source documents, a paid subscription is necessary. An example of a free source document would be the US Census. I did a search of the surname "Cohen", no first name or other information and received a return of 38,377 results. The results were from: Ireland, England and Scotland and ranged >from the US Census to Passenger Lists Leaving the UK (1890-1960), US Passenger Lists, US Marriages, Canadian Border crossings and more. The country of origin was predominately listed as England, and Ireland, but there were some >from Canada, Scotland and Wales. In this example I did not find birth, and death records, naturalization applications and draft registrations, but they are also included in the collection's records. In full disclosure I did not view all 38,000 return results. If a record, such as a US military record, says the soldier was born in Wales or Ireland or the UK, or in a US census record someone in the family was born in England, Ireland, Scotland or Wales then that record should be in the collection. Anyone leaving the UK or Ireland emigrating to Canada, the US or the Caribbean, or any British or Irish immigrant who stopped temporarily in Canada en route to the US or Caribbean and anyone listed on any US or Canadian record with British or Irish origins, birthplace or parents should be in the collection. To search the collection go to: https://tinyurl.com/yc9m2g55 Original url: https://search.findmypast.ie/search-world-Records/british-and-irish-roots-collection Registration with your name, email and password is required. I have no affiliation with Findmypast and am posting this solely for the information of the reader. Jan Meisels Allen Chairperson, IAJGS Public Records Access Monitoring Committee |
