Jewish calendar and names
#general
Jonina Duker <jonina.duker@...>
If you don't have much Jewish background, try to train yourself to
start thinking in terms of the Jewish calendar in terms of dates and holidays and the lunar cycle. Remember that the Jewish calendar set the essential rhythms for the lives of many of your ancestors. By remembering to "keep a foot in each world", you will find it easier to understand what you are learning about your family. You may also be able to figure things out that you couldn't otherwise. An anecdote to illustrate: I have twin aunts who are half-way through the birth order in a family of ten (this is relevant because with births in quick succession many times the family no longer had deceased ancestors they wanted to remember with names.) Although I know their birthday if I didn't I would know it in a heartbeat. Why? Because their names are Esther and Hadassah. These are the same name: Esther, the "Persian" or whatever, and Hadassah, the Hebrew. So when would twin girls be born who would be given these names? Purim, of course! Jonina Duker is searching: BEIDICK (near Minsk), DUKER (near Minsk), maybe GOLDBERG, GORODINSKY (Minsk), KATZ (probably Latvia), LEVINE (probably near Minsk), RACHMAN (Salakas, Simferopol), SCHMUELIWITZ (probably near Minsk), SIEGEL (near Vilna), STRAUSS and more to be later identified ...

Never Give Up

Ada <adag@...>
After complaining bitterly about the lack of response I had >from Argentina
to my letters trying to establish a family relationship, I tried one more time and sent out another batch. The first time I had the letter translated into Spanish and only wrote those with postal codes, as I had been told that the mail wouldn't be delivered to those without postal codes. My second letter, about a year later, I wrote in English and I sent to every person listed in the phone directory with the same surname as mine. I wrote in January of this year. Last week, I am thrilled to report, that one of the non-postal-coded persons replied to me! His family did indeed come >from the same place as mine, in 1904, and we are sure we are cousins, but now it remains to find the elusive connection. Thank you to all of you who gave me encouragement to keep trying, and I wish to pass on that same sentiment again to others. Who knows if we will be able to establish a relationship, but the feeling I have at having made this contact is quite exhilerating and overwhelming. Never give up, and thank you. Ada Glustein.

Dear JewishGenners:
Today I met with the wife of the AID Officer >from the US Embassy in Minsk to discuss a variety of issues about which I will post later in a separate message. During the course of the meeting she told me that she spoke with Mrs. Alla Borisovna WOLFSON in Belarus who had asked her to help trace some long lost relatives (or their descendents) who had immigrated to the US in the early 1900's. The limited information I was provided is found below: Father's Relatives: Haim and Avremut SORKIN left for Brooklyn, NY in 1914.
