surname FIZAAN origin #general

Ton Smit <tst@...>

Who knows the origin of the surname FIZAAN which in the Netherlands is
extremely rare. A worldwide search on FIZAAN on the Internet gave no
results. Linguistic evidence seems to point to Arabic or Persian
sources, but on this I feel not sure. If FIZAAN is your surname,
reactions are most welcome.

Searching ZAGRANICHNA in St. Petersburg (Leningrad) #general

Moshe Chertoff <chertoff@...>

Dear Genners--Shalom,

I am posting this search in the name of a Holocaust survivor who lives
in Yaffo, Israel. She has nothing to show >from any of her searches,
including >from her visit to Zhitomir, Ukraine (where she spent her years
following the war). The Ukrainian authorities even deny her own
existence in records. There's no record of her or her family anywhere.

Pessiah Korman (nee Zagranichna) has been looking for her three
siblings:

* Rachel (b. 1922) a nurse
* Ella (b.1927)
* Chaim (b. 1929)

No one has been able to supply her with any information about them.

Pessiah just met a woman, by chance, who made Aliya seven years ago from
St. Petersburg (Leningrad) and was a school teacher there. When the
woman heard the name ZAGRANICHNA, she was amazed. She said that she had
a young girl pupil back in St. Petersburg with the same surname. It is
not a common name.

Pessiah is looking for that young girl (of eight years ago) who attended
the Leningrad School #272 that was located at 8 Krasnow Armeskiya (Red
Army) Street. It is her hope that one of the girl's parents might be
one of her siblings.

If anyone >from St. Petersburg knows the ZAGRANICHNA Family, has access
to the school, or is willing to check out this single, most important
lead that Pessiah has come across in the last 50 years...PLEASE CONTACT
ME BY EMAIL.

Sincerely,

Moshe Chertoff

Miriam Margolyes <75342.3217@...>

Dear Fellow JewishGenners,

My great-aunt Sarah MARGOLYES married Elijah PASEVITCH & they
settled in Glasgow, Scotland. We thought all members of his
family emigrated. But we find a letter (only a month ago-
stuck in an envelope) showing that a STUPEL family remained
in Grodno (Belorus)in 1939. And Elijah had a brother, first
name unknown, who changed his name to PASE & his widow,
Henrietta PASE died in Shelby County, Memphis, Tenn. in
October 1971. She was 103 years old.

I search for her children & grandchildren-does anyone have contact
with anyone in Memphis?? I don't know how to find the name of the
local newspaper there.

I can help anyone in London, Amsterdam or Santa Monica.

Thanks -Miriam MARGOLYES:

Hello everyone,

I'm a 'newbie' to this forum, so I'll just put one toe in
the water here. My paternal grandmothers (KOPCIAK) family
is >from Radzyn going well into the 1700's. My G-father
(KAMENMACHER) is >from Poland too, but we're having trouble
puting a finger on one town/city to focus on, Praga/Warsaw
maybe, but that's a lot of microfilm to check. I know that
members of both families migrated to France in the early
1900's. >from the several hundred messages I've browsed I'm
awed by the knowledge of some of the 'regulars'.
I've checked JGFF (#19052) but certainly not every nook-and-
cranny. Can anyone help? Even history on the names might
be nice. Thanks in advance.

MODERATOR NOTE: No need to check all the microfilms <grin>...>from the
JewishGen homepage http://www.jewishgen.org click on Databases and
then enter the surnames of interest in every 'possible' dbs we have
online. Make certain you try both precise spellings and Daitch-
Mokotoff soundex versions of the name. I have a sneaking hunch
you'll be surprised. <VBG>
