Re: FALK #general

Harold Pollins <pollins@...>

I have no knowledge of the origin of the name but I was intrigued to come
across a Jewish soldier >from Liverpool who was killed in France in 1916
and, having no known grave, is commemorated on the Arras Memorial. He was
David COHEN and is so listed in the official records and in the British
Jewry Book of Honour. Yet the Commonwealth War Graves Commission states
that his real surname was FALK.

Many men in the army served under a different name, for all manner of
reasons, one no doubt being to avoid prejudice if they had a foreign or
Jewish name. In fact most Jews with such names did not change them. There
were plenty of Jews serving in COHEN/FALK's regiment whose name ended in
-sky or -ski. I could nevertheless understand why an EPSTEIN served as
HEPSTONE or a HYAMS as SMITH. But it is odd to find a FALK serving as
COHEN.

Incidentally at least six soldiers in the British Army in the First World
War who were named FALK died or were killed on service, not counting the
man mentioned above. Four of the six were definitely Jews and one of the
others was Charles Christian FALK.

MODERATOR NOTE: The comments on alternative surnames of British soldiers
in the First World War are of interest, but as we have established the
connection between Joshua and Falk, it is time to declare that thread
closed.

Kobriner Hevra #belarus

Mintz <mintz@...>

Hi everyone: A distant relative mentioned that there was a "Kobriner Hevra
(Chevra)" in New York City. Does anyone know if the society still exists
or of anyone who was associated with it. I'm trying to learn more about
Kobrin - the town of my paternal ancestors. Are there any synagogues with
burial records still in existance. Any help would be appreciated. Also,
does anyone know when the Yehudim of that area acquired surnames?
My great grandfather Mordecai (Max) MINTZ and great grandmother Rickel
EPSTEIN emigrated >from there ca. 1904; and my grandfather Abraham Jacob
MINTZ and grandmother (origianlly >from Odessa) Sprinia PLATINSKI emigrated
ca. 1913. Can anyone connect?

Regards,

Philip Mintz

YAGUDEN? from Vitebsk Gubernia #belarus

Neil J. Young

I have just started to research the family tree and have traced it
back to the Vitebsk Gubernia (out in the country and not within a
city), where my great grandfather left between 1900 and 1905.

Our name now is "Young". The older generations remember the actual
name as being pronounced as "Young-kuchin". An uncle thinks it was
spelled "Yaguden".

I was excited to learn that my family was fluent in Russian, Hebrew,
and Yiddish -- however disappointed that these languages were not
passed down to my generation.

Any help in determining the correct spelling or how it should be
pronounced would be appreciated.

Obviously, none of the historical records indicate "Young the
grandfather of Neil" and I need a little more to start searching some
of the on-line voting records,etc.

thanks.

N. Young

Shalom,
I am looking for the family of my g-g-aunt MIRIAM FRIED born in the
second half of the last century in TISZA LOK, Hungary. Her father's name
was JERACHMIEL FRIED. Her husband was AZRIEL (I don't know his
Hungarian name) FELDMANN. They lived in TISZA KESZI, Hungary and
around 1910 made aliyya to Jerusalem. Azriel died in 1913 and Miriam in
1936, both in Jerusalem.
I know that an uncle of mine visited his Feldmann relatives in
ABAUJSZANTO, Hungary in 1943. I do not know if any members of the family
survived the Holocaust. Can anyone give me more information about this
family?

Re: marriage at 12 #general

Jonina Duker <jonina.duker@...>

I know, really obvious and may not help at all but!

Given that age 12 was when a daughter became "bas mitzvah" and no longer
a minor under a father's control in Jewish law, could it be so simple as
a daughter coming out >from that father's control in the easiest way
possible -- marriage? At that age she could decide to accept a suitor on
her own; prior to age would have been up to a father.

L'Shalom.'
