Liverpool Rooming House #general

linda zolinsky <linda_zolinsky@...>

My Great Aunt, Ida EDELMAN RAINER remembered staying at a Jewish Rooming
House in Liverpool on the way to being smuggled into the US via Canada.
The rooming house was run by a family named GOLDBERG. Mr. GOLDBERG was a
cook on a ship. He bribed the ship's doctor to allow my ggm and g-aunt
to allow them to board to Canada. My g-aunt also remembered that the
GOLDBERG's had a maid named Maggie. Would anyone have information of
Jewish run rooming houses as temporary shelter before heading to
America/Canada or the GOLDBERG's of Liverpool.

<< Anyone know the derivation of the name Tanhum or Tenachem? >>

Any number of derivations is possible, perhaps the distortion of another
name or of a town or professions.

On the other hand, the words are also Hebrew and related to Nachem; to
comfort/console. Na(c)hum is the name of a Biblical prophet and his book.
Common variants are Menachem, Nachman, Nechama. Tenachem means "console
yourself" (some say "may you be consoled").

Tanchum was the name of a numberr of sages whose opinio is cited in the
Jerusalem Talmud (Yerushalmi). It is also the name associated with
various collections of Midrashim (exegeses) especially with those known as
Yelamdenu; the author is said to have been Tanhum, but that is just a
tradition..

I don't recall the name Tanhum or Tenachem as being used as a current first
name in modern Israel.

Help with name.... #general

Linda Saegert <lsaegert@...>

I really have a problem and no one is left alive to ask in my family.
When my GF came to this country in 1876 he took the name SILVERSTEIN,
but my late mother told me that was NOT his name, that his name was
....
Now, this is phonetic, remember that her first language was Yiddish,
but she did not have an accent. She pronounced it like this...SAYFET,
stressing the final "T"
Now...her married name was SAEGERT and she said that they sounded so
similar!
I have no clue as to how to spell this and so don't know where to
look. I know that he was >from "White Russia" and that when he was 13
his parents were both killed (pogrom?) and that in his 1881
Naturalization papers he swore disallegience to the Emperor of Russia.
In this country he was a tailor and had a store on Delancey St.
Can anyone offer any suggestions?
Thanks so much,
Linda Saegert
