Confused by names

West24th <west24th@...>
Just received a copy of social Security application form for a Sarah
Zimmerman born 1876 in the Ukraine. On it she lists her fathers name as Edel LEIDER & where it says mothers name is recorded: Leah UNK. Not certain if UNK is a rather uncommon family name or an abreviation for the word unknown. Was writing Unk when family names were not known done in 1966? Or could just be a mispelling of something else? Thanks for any comments either direct or to the group on this mystery. Hebrew names--Brothers
#general
H. Marshall Schaffner <hmssaba@...>
Recently took pictures of family tombstones while visiting in Chicago.
Thought that I had identified the graves of two cousins until I took a closer look at their fathers' Hebrew names. One's father was named Schlame Itzhak and the other's father was named Mordechai Itzhak. Presumably these fathers were brothers, however it now seems unlikely as they both have the same second Hebrew name of "Itzhak". My Question, is it possible that brothers would be given the same Hebrew name if it is a second name? -- Marshall Schaffner Martinez, CA Searching: ERKES, SHOTKIN, KOROSTYCHEVSKY,ZALMAN

Re: Two Different NYC Marriage Certificates for the Same Couple
#general
Lew Norman <lewnorman@...>
Was it customary to obtain two different NYC marriage certificates whenLet's see if we can clear this mystery up once and for all, as there have been hundreds of postings regarding marriage records in NYC over the past couple of years. The cause for confusion among even knowledgeable JewishGenners is due to a is lack of understanding of the basic local laws. A cursory knowledge of the law behind these legal documents will facilitate a better understanding of both its form and substance. There are two questions to be answered here. First, between 1908 and 1937, BOTH the NYC Clerk's Office AND the NYC Department of Health maintained marriage records. That is the explaination, plain and simple. Second, if you carefully read these two marriage documents, you will notice that the NYC Department of Health record is a marriage CERTIFICATE, while the NYC Clerk's Office record consists of both a LICENSE and a CERTIFICATE. A marriage license was required to be obtained before the couple could be legally married. Once the license was issued, the couple had 90 days in which to be married, either by a Judge, authorized civil clerk or a Rabbi. The existance of only a license (but no certificate) does not meant that the couple were actually married. The marriage certificate is evidence that the couple were legally married (by a Rabbi or otherwise) and is signed by the couple, the witnesses and the person performing the ceremony. The two different dates Ms. Peskin referrs to are the date the City Clerk signed and issued the license (the earlier date) and the date the ceremony was actually performed by the Rabbi. This later date is the date of the marriage and is the date which should appear on the Ketubah. There is another very important issue which I am compelled to address. People often refer to a "civil" marriage as opposed to a "religious/Jewish" marriage. This is a misnomer, and there is really no such thing. A civil marriage is one where a civil clerk or Judge performs the ceremony. A religious marriage is where the ceremony is peformed by a clergyman. But, nevertheless, in a Jewish wedding, before the Rabbi could or would legally marry them, the couple was required to obtain a marriage license >from the City Clerk (there is a sub-issue relating to which county the certificate was to be obtained from, but I will not address that here) and present this license to the Rabbi prior to the ceremony, and the Rabbi would file it with the City Clerk and/or Department of Health (depending on which document it was) after the ceremony was performed. Therefore, a "religious" marriage always generated a "civil" marriage record, and you could NOT have ONLY a "Jewish marriage" without a "civil marriage" because the marriage would not be legal! (Although it might be considered legal under Jewish law.) All those many instances in the past where JewishGenners have posted messages stating "I cannot find the civil marriage certificate in NYC for my grandparents and therefore they must have had only a religious ceremony and not a civil ceremony" cannot be correct. It only means that the certificate was never filed by the Rabbi or was misfiled or misindexed or lost or accidently destroyed. In summation, all Jewish/religious marriages in NYC were also considered civil marriages if they were legal and a marriage license was obtained before, and a certificate was filed after. Of course, this holds true only after such time that the civil authorities required that marriage licenses be obtained and certificates be filed, but I do not know the date in NYC after which these documents were required.
