Dear Fellow Researchers,

Do you have ancestors >from Belchatow or the surrounding areas?
Belchatow (51=BA22'/19=BA23') is located only 27 miles south of
Lodz and 13 miles west of Piotrkow Trybunalski. If you have or will
be using the Jewish Records Indexing - Poland database to do
research into your family names, we need your help.

The Belchatow Shtetl CO-OP volunteers have begun transcribing the
family names and dates of birth, marriage and death indices of the
Belchatow records held by the Family History Center in Salt Lake City.
The results of our time and effort engaging in this project will be made
available to all researchers via the Jewish Records Indexing - Poland
website on JewishGen.

To date, we've ordered most of the the Polish language films (1809-1867),
placed them on permanent loan to be able to check the records themselves
when the indices are illegible, copied the indices, made back-up copies,
enhanced some pages by further enlarging and adjusting the lighting on
those copies for easier readability, and mailed packets to volunteers.
When we first started this, many of you expressed interest in the records
of Belchatow but were unable to volunteer to help index these records
at the time. We are eager to welcome any of you who are now in the
position to join us in this indexing project. Experience is not necessary.
We're all learning together. Those joining us will have access to the
Belchatow records already indexed as well as surnames common to that
area of Poland.

If you're interested in what we're doing but cannot join us as an active
volunteer, please contact me for other ways you can support this important
endeavor.

We volunteers are eager to get the results to you as soon as possible. We
need your help.
Thank You.

Re: Lumber Business #belarus

Joel Levinson <joell@...>

My family was in the lumber business. My great-grandfather lived in
Varapaeva, on a dairy farm just outside Dunilovichi. According to my
grandmother, he bought and sold forests. What he did was he would buy a
area of forest, together with a non jewish partner. Since Jews could not
own land, the deal was that he bought the trees, the partner bought the
land. He then had the trees cut down and sold them to the army for
firewood. Part of the reason my family came to the US when they did russia
was defeated in one of the wars of the time (turn of the century)they did
not pay him, and he was wiped out financially.

Peter B. Golden <pgolden@...>

More on Jews and the lumber business : My grandfather, a native of Parichi
who grew up in Rogachov and surrounding areas, worked as a "splavshchik"
(timber-floater) as a child. Among his duties were to take soundings (a
"mark twain") and call out directions, warn of obstructions etc. as they
brought the logs down the Dnepr to Ukraine. He also worked in crews that
built saw-mills that dotted that part of Belarus'. The timber business in
forest-rich Belarus' was quite extensive and Jews played a role in all
levels, >from the bottom to the very top. Much of this work was seasonal and
those at the lower end, like my grandfather, practiced other trades as
well. His ancestral craft was rope-making. He also was a house painter and
worked for the railroad, painting stations. It was, by all accounts, a
tough life.

Mishna "Gittin" (divorces) starts off with "Hamevi get mi`ever layam tzarich
lomar . . . " "Someone who delivers a decree of divorce >from overseas must
state 'It was written and signed in my presence.' " It then goes into great
details as to get (pl gittin) delivered by proxy.

I understand that Conservative Jews have the frequently exercised option of
giving a get by proxy, in the halakhic manner, when they simply wish to avoid
confronting each other in a Bet Din. In Orthodox circles that is reserved
usually for the case in which the couple now live far apart.

In any event, the wife has to be willing to accept the get. She cannot be
divorced without her knowledge and consent.

Chaim Chemerinsky, Weitzmann's first cousin once removed, in his 1917
deathbed memorir -- Ayarati Motele -- describes the business even better.
That's where I found out how my g-g-father made and lost his "forune".
Alas, you have to be able to read Hebrew and the book is not widely available.

interested in hearing reminiscences or learning of other sources.
