Thank you to everyone who took the time to reply to my post. I need to
spend some quality time going through all your suggestions. A number of you asked questions. I will try and answer some in case you can help me further in breaching the brick wall Three SMOLENSKI sisters came to Liverpool in the UK around 1896/97/98. I know this because two of the sisters had children whose births were registered in 1898/99 The oldest sister was Matilda/Tilly known to the family as Toby. She was married to Louis BERNSTEIN and their first child was born October 1898 in Liverpool. Next was Annie known as Chaika. She was married to Issac KALINSKY/Kolinsky/Karalinski. Their firt child was born Sept 1899 My ggm was the youngest of the three. On the 1901 UK census, she is named as Jane SMOLENSKI and living with Chaika and Isaac KALINSKY. On the census she is 17 and unmarried. She is also found on other documents as Jenny and the family called her Sheina She married Max COHEN. I don't know when. I cannot find that their marriage was registered civilly and therefore have to assume it was a "Stille Chupah" On the 1901 census, all three sisters give their place of birth as Russia. By 1911, Toby gives "Wistiniz", Chaika gives "Germany" and Sheina is still saying Russia To date I still do not know where they came >from and so I used a story heard >from a couple of cousins to try another way. They told me that there were also brothers. One cousin said there were 3 and that one or more went to the USA. One of the brothers was called CHARLIE. Here is where I have a difference in the story. One cousin said he returned >from USA to fight for Germany in WW1. He travelled via Liverpool to see his sisters. The other cousin said that he came >from Germany where he owned a hotel. On the off-chance he died fighting in the war, I searched the German war records and found Karl SCHMOLINSKI, I have no idea if he is related but knowing his place of birth may allow me to see if I can find the birth records of the three Liverpool sisters Sorry for such a long story. I hope that those who asked the questions have had them answered. Apologies if I missed any - please ask again. I'll try not to write such a long email next time! Thanks Sue Coleman Harrow, UK colemanfamilytree@... ****Moderator Note- **** Please write all last names of family members and their spouses and relatives in all capital letters. (KALINSKY) Please don't use all capitals for any other text. To emphasize a word or phrase do it *** this way ***. Thanks Moderator |

Call for Papers (Abstract Proposal System)
#poland
Dan Oren <iajgs2018@...>
The IAJGS 2018 Warsaw Conference is delighted to announce that the
Call-for-Papers (Abstract Proposal System) will be open for submittals from 15 Nov 2017 through 31 Dec 2017. We will issue a formalannouncement when the actual opening occurs, but here is a brief description of the types of presentations that we will be looking for: 1) Presentations: A one-hour timeslot dedicated to about 45 minutes of lecture with about 15 minutes of question & answers, with PowerPoint, film or other illustrative component. 2) Short Presentations: A 30-minute timeslot dedicated to a 20-minute presentation on a novel genealogy research project that you are working on that could benefit others: a slide show of your visit to a shtetl; or the explanation of how you accomplished a genealogy special find (like how you found your grandparents' marriage record when everyone said it couldn't be done). Note: It may be preferable for a BOF (Birds of a Feather Group) to forgo having a BOF meeting this summer and instead use this 30-minute format for a meeting of Landsleit to share a previous or prepare for an upcoming shtetl trip. 3) Computer Workshop: A 2-hour program dedicated to a guided tour of and training on how to use a website, function or software application on a computer. 4) Panel Discussion: A one-hour timeslot dedicated to combining several people or topics in an interactive format between panelists, such as a discussion among experts in a related field. This conference will take place in Warsaw; however, the presentations most sought after might be focused on Resources, Empires, Jewish Culture/History and Keepers of Jewish Communal Memory or Historic Sites in Central and Eastern Europe. The Program Committee will accept approximately 120 one-hour lectures/panels and approximately 50 short presentations. The Abstract Proposal System will be linked to the Conference home page when the time comes. Stay tuned! Jewels and Ashes by Arnold Zable

Deborah Stoloff
I am rereading Jewels and Ashes by Arnold Zable in hopes of seeing familiar
names. The author does a great job weaving a story based on his roots trip to post war Bialystok and what his immigrant parents and relatives told him during his Australian upbringing. I like this book because it humanizes people as it discusses their likes, dislikes, jobs, relatives, hobbies. It is not just names and dates. I recommend this book. If lucky, you might encounter a familiar name. Deborah Stoloff deb02762@... researching Zegerman, Kagan, Stoloff, etc. |

Now there's a message at both sites that I don't have permission to access the site. Is there another website for researching these records? |
