Apparently he enlisted in the Red Army in the 18th Division, 222th regiment on
15th March 1942 and was discharged on 2nd November 1943 due to an injury

My main questions are:
1. Could you join the Red Army if you were not a Soviet citizen? ...
2. How can I get information about this regiment...
3. How can I get information about my father's service?

Hi Rita,

After the war between Russia and Nazi Germany started (June 22, 1941) Russian
Government was eager to draft any man the could get into the army. So a Polish
army corps under command of general Anders was organized >from the refugees of
Polish - German war in 1939.
After General Anders and his corps left Russia via Asia and North Africa
(that's how the future prime-minister of Israel Menachem Begin came to
Palestine) Polish refugees who didn't want to leave were organized in Polish
division. I don't know what number that division was assigned but I do remember
that it has also a name. 55 years had passed and my memory faded but it seems
to me that the name was "Boleslav Berut division"
Your father might be in that division. The army archives in Moscow
still have documents who served, where, including Polish division and 18th
division (if they are not the same).
You have a lot of emigrants >from Russia in your city and one of them, I'm sure,
will help you to write in Russian a letter to Russian military archives in
Moscow (Tsentral'nii archiv Ministerstva Oborony) requesting information you
are looking for.

searching: COHEN, formerly Sheinhouse/Sheinhaus/Sheinheuz #general

gen@...

I'm seeking the descendants of two brothers of a seven sibling
family, who came >from Radoshkovichi, Molodechno & Smorgon in
the Vileika uezd of Belarus.

They were all children of Chaim SHEINHOUSE also spelled
SHEINHAUX & SHEINHEUZ. All of the brothers changed their names
to COHEN after arriving in New York.

Jacob Cohen, also called Selig, came to New York in the 1870s
or 1880s, married a blacksmith's daughter named Channah or
Hannah. They initially lived in the Boro Park section of
Brooklyn NY. They had 5 children the oldest of which was Harry
and is supposed to have moved with a sister to Chicago.

Jacob developed 2nd biggest cloak and suit manufacturing plant
in the country and employed 1500 people at 424 Broadway, just
North of Canal St in New York City. We know that the firm was
in operation at least until 1910, but we don't know if it
survived the huge cloak and suit strike of 1913-15.

The oldest brother Label (Louis or Leon) is believed not to
have changed his name. We don't know if he married but he
remained very close to his sister in law Sophie's family after
his brother Wolf COHEN died in 1913.

The other siblings of this family were Wolf, Sarah or Sore,
Abraham, Rischke & Schmuel.

If you are a descendant of either Jacob or Label or know this
family please contact me privately.

Best regards,
Stephen A. Cohen

In my last posting there appeared a garbled sentence, which was supposed to
read as follows:

"In the book of Genesis, Jacob, whose name is changed to Israel in this
story, was the grandson of Sarah."

Sorry for the garbling, which resulted >from careless editing on my part!

Our immigrants (my mother in law and extended family) >from Wolkowisk in Minsk
gubernia told of the closing of the gymnazia to Jews in the 20's (and the
attendant threat of of instant military draft to boys not in school)- which
makes it logical that they had served the Jewish population previously.. Our
family attended a private Jewish school largely managed by Ha shomeretz yair
(sp?).. but that didn't keep the military away - so they left. I think some
of this is mentioned in the English portion of the Wolkowisk Yiskor Book..
