The father of modern Hebrew, Eleazar Ben Yehuda (PEARLMAN) was born in
Luzhki, Lithuania in 1858. If records there of his ancestors or his
own birth and marriage still exist, where would they be? In the state
archives of Lithuania, which once controlled Luzhki? In Vitebsk, the
closest Belarus archives, or in the national archives in Minsk?
Thanks,
Sy Pearlman (pearlman@...)

D. Abrams <dabrams1@...>
Apropos the subject of research difficulties caused by unknown name
changes, I am seeking advice regarding how to record known surname changes
on family trees. Are there any standardized conventions to be followed in
creating family tree entries for those whose surnames have changed
completely or who have modified spelling?
I've been entering the last name used by relatives now deceased and the
currently used name for those living but am not sure if this is correct and
am not entirely happy with the results.
For the sake of future researchers seeking original documents or additional
information, are there "rules" governing change of names on family tree
entries or a way to footnote name changes on the tree itself? I use Family
Tree Maker software and it doesn't seem to have such a feature. It allows
listing "also known as" names in all reports but, as far as I can tell, it
only allows nicknames as additional entries in trees.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.

A few months ago I posted a query about lookups in the Johannesburg
phonebook for BROUDES.
Anne Lapidus Brest in Johannesburg responded with a list of 12 BROUDES.
The first listing was a doctor whom she suggested I fax. I faxed him on
November 18 and wrote to one other. I have had no responses and told
Anne.
She offered to call them and discovered the doctor is out of town
until January. So she called the other, a D. Broude who was out of town
also.
Yesterday I received an e-mail >from Anne. She reached D. Broude who is
Deborah Broude and spoke to her husband Reginald Louis. >from talking to
him, Anne discovered they are related on her YODAIKEN side!
The way Anne phrased it: "While doing research for you, I ended up
calling my own family." Their familes both settled in Ireland before
continuing on to South Africa.
Anne included a family tree of Reginald Broude going back to 1825. I
cannot tell if we are related, his greatgrandfather could be a brother
to my greatgrandfather. Reginald's grandfather's name is Janke Broude
and my grandfather's name is Jacob Broude. Since Janke is Yiddish for
Jacob, they could be first cousins. My BROUDES are >from Kelme, Lithuania
and Reginald's are >from Kalnel which is about 40 miles >from Kelme.
These are my thoughts and ideas on proving if we are related. Tombstones
would help for their father's names or birth records, their children's
marriage records or death records. This means obtaining records >from
Lithuania. Would my grandfather have any records with his grandfather's
name on it? I am thinking out loud (or in writing) I don't have records
with my name and my grandfather's so this doesn't look good. Help!
I want to publicly thank Anne for her help. She performed a mitzvah.

I hope this isn't too far off topic:
During World War II a number of Jewish children traveled from
Amsterdam to Sweden, and I have been told that some of these children
stayed in the lighthouse on a small danish island, Tuno.
It hasn't been possible for me to find any documentation so I thought
somebody here might help. I, myself, live on the island mentioned and
I find it surprising that nobody here can give further information.
Best regards
