Shalom!
I read with great interest in the JewishGen info file <nycvote> nycvote@... about receiving information >from NY electoral rolls . Is there a way of receiving similar information on Californian citizens? Where can I write to for such records? Many thanks in advance, Lance Ackerfeld. Yiftah, Israel.

Dolores Palomo <sphinx@...>
Records of discharged, deceased and retired merchant marines are in the
custody of the National Personnel Records Center, Military Personnel Records, 9700 Page Boulevard, St. Louis, MO 63132. I believe you can find this on a website through NARA with instructions and maybe a form. However, the records will be supplied only to an heir such as a spouse or descendent. Dolores Palomo

Not "Merchant Marines", but "the merchant marine" (no caps). This means the
the whole body of the _commercial_ ships of a nation, so that we are not talking about a military service, and "rank", in the military sense, is not an applicable term, nor is "service record". -> A cousin of mine served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. His ship -> was sunk on the Murmansk Run delivering supplies to Russia and he was lost at -> sea. I do not know the name of his ship or his rank. -> -> I have several questions: -> -> 1) Does the military issue death certificates or is there just a notation -> made on the service record? -> -> 2) If a certificate is issued, what information would be contained on it and -> how would one obtain a copy? -> -> 3) In the same vein, would a civilian death certificate be issued for that -> person and if so where would one look for it? -> Many thanks, -> Robert Silverstein -> Aurora, Colorado -> RoMaSi@... Dear Litvakers,
My grandmothers cousin, Rabbi Yekutiel Leib Elion(Elian) had a string of daughters. I am missing the names of two in particular and would be grateful for help in finding any descendents:- The first married Rabbi Menachem Mendel bar Avraham HaCohen Barenbaum who presided as a Rabbi in Yagada in Vitebsk around 1912 as well as in some Lithuanian communities The second married Rabbi Yaacov bar Tzvi Arye Smorgan or Samorgan who preside in Dvinsk in 1912 as well as some Lithuanian communities. Lastly I am searching for a Goldman family who are levites and one branch of the family settled in Philadelphia at the end of the last century. They came >from Lithuania or Belarus. I sent the following message to Ted Gostin, President of the
JGS of LosAngeles. I am posting it here to encourage others to also send a message of thanks. What the JGSLA did, is indeed rare. Ted's e-mail address is: tedgostin@... Please send your message direct to Ted and not to the digest. Dear Ted, I think the $3,000 contribution to the Litvak SIG >from the JGSLA was a wonderful thing to do. It shows a great spirit of cooperation in the world of Jewish genealogy that many of us are hoping for. It also proves that there is more to Jewish genealogy than just the "me, me" syndrome. Congratulations to you and the JGSLA for a decision well made. Howard Margol Atlanta, Georgia

" Thus we ordinary subscribers are made two realize, that there are at least 2 grades of membership in LitvakSIG. One grade is the ordinary subscriber, and a higher grade are the paid-up members, who receive the newsletter. Why not simply tell us: ""send membership dues of $ 30 to Latvia SIG, pob 280422 Northridge CA-91328-0422 usa. " get blank form on http://www.jewishgen.org/latvia/membership.html . " When we litvak sig get your check, you get your newsletter."" I have just mailed my annual dues. Sorry you dont handle credit cards. I sense, that there is yet a third and higher grade of membership. It is for those, who make the decisions for us. They moderate and monitor the e-mail ,nd decide who is allowed access to our e-mail forum and what may be said. It seems that to belong to the highest grade, a person must contribute significant time and effort to LatvianSIG. I admire the good people, who volunteer so much time and effort to make LatvianSIG a more effective and productive tool for genealogical research and free exchange of genealogical information, They rightly deserve our admiration and public accolades, But I also cherish the democratic rights of free speech for all of us, be we 1 . subscription members only, 2. paid up members, or 3. ruling members. Greetings to all 3 classes of members from Prof. Harry J. Hirschhorn , POB 114, Alfe Menashe 44851, Israel. searching for GANS. Especially for Robert Heyman (robeh@...), our newsletter editor. For the newsletter, I would like to suggest the following topics; perhaps they already appeared in the past.? I believe many others are like me and want to know more about the background of our relatives and ancestors. 1. History of Jews in Latvia, brief outline 2 or 3 pages. 2. General history of Latvia, wars and economics. to serve as background for 1. above. After all, our ancestors lived as a minority amongst the general population as butchers, peddlers and tavern keepers, and were affected by their economic situation. 3.List of Holocaust victims >from Latvia .
