We are in need of a Town Leader, who is willing to take over management of
the KehilaLinks page for Kamenets. We have an opportunity to make a major
acquisition of records for Kamenets that includes some records for
surrounding towns, but a Town Leader is needed to monitor the fund raising
project and help organize the effort. Funds are raised via JewishGen, so no
handling of money is involved, and we can help you organize and track the
project. Maintaining the KehilaLinks page involves the willingness to learn
some basics of web entry or to work with one of our volunteers. Contact me
directly for more information, if you are interested in helping further this
project along. Records available include Kamenets_Podolskii; Monthly
books with applications for burial,1905-1907; Metrical books - b., m.,
div., d.,1836-1838; Kamenets-Podolskii; Lists of recruits, born
1873-4,1895-1895.

Please contact me privately.

Re: Identifying Owners of Tallitot and Tefillin? #general

Perhaps there is info on or inside the tallit bag, or inside the tefillin
bags.

I sewed name tapes inside our family's bags, and when my husband got a new
tallit and new bag it was embroidered with his Hebrew name on the outside.

Need marriage records from Gwozdziec, Galicia #galicia

Ben Kempner

Hi,

Does anyone know how to find marriage records or a Ketubah >from a
religious ceremony, probably in the late 1860s in or near Gwozdziec,
Galicia (current-day Hvizdets, Ivano Frankivsk oblast, Ukraine)?

I am searching for the marriage records for my great-grandfather
Schmerl SPERBER (b. 1845 Gwozdziec; d. 1917 Vienna). I think his first
wife was Minnie or Minna STEIN. His second wife, my great-grandmother,
was Mancie FRIEDMANN. She died in Galicia in 1910.

Thank you.

Jewish Tarnow Translation Project #galicia

Neil Bratter <nonnobratter@...>

Dear Fellow Researcher,

I'm pleased to let you know, that the JewishGen Yizkor Book project
has set up a translation fund for the Tarnow, Poland Yizkor Book. Our
goal is to raise a total of $30,000 to have the Yizkor book translated
from Hebrew/Yiddish to English. The funds will be used for translation
fees primarily.

If you would like to donate, please click here and you will be taken to
the online donation page:

https://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/v_projectslist.asp?project_cat=23

Scroll down the page for the Tarnow listing and enter the amount that
you would like to donate. Any amount is fine. The donation is tax
deductible and you will be able to print a tax receipt.

This project is important to me as I was born in Tarnow on May 1, 1945.
My mother (nee Sturmwind) and three of her sisters who all survived
the war and my father (who came >from another town), went back to
Tarnow after the Shoah. I was one of the first Jewish children born in
the town after the war. More than a score of my close relatives
perished. I have always wondered about their lives before the war in
Tarnow, where almost half of the residents were Jewish. There are few
remaining signs of the once vibrant Jewish community which existed
in Tarnow. A major undertaking is now taking place to restore the
Jewish cemetery in Tarnow.

Yizkor books were written after the Holocaust as memorials to Jewish
communities destroyed in the war. They were put together by
survivors >from those communities and contain descriptions and
histories of the community, biographies of prominent people, and lists
of people who perished. They are often embellished with photos,
maps, and other memorabilia. Yizkor books are valuable to
genealogists since the books may include biographies or photographs
of relatives and may include family members in a list of people who
perished. Yizkor books also give important background information
about the history and Jewish life in a particular community.

Yizkor books can be valuable, not only to genealogists but to anyone
wanting to learn about Jewish life and culture in the communities that
vanished in the Holocaust.

Feel free to forward this to anyone who might be interested.

Thank you in advance,
Neil Bratter

Ukraine SIG #Ukraine Surname GERVINETSKY #ukraine

Igor Schein <igorschein@...>

I just started researching this surname - the family is closely
related to SHOR line I've been researching for years. It seems to be
a very obscure name. Beider doesn't list it, nothing on Yad Vashem or
Jewishgen. All I was able to find out on my own is that family lived
in Nemirov, Podolia, based on 2 arrival manifests, which is consistent
with some a priori information. Any clues about the origin of this
surname would be greatly appreciated. There could be alternative
spelling variations - GORVENETSKY, GERWINITZKY, etc. 2 surnames
resonate closely - HORWITZ (which is how the surname was americanized)
and VINNITSKY (>from city of Vinntsa), but not close enough in my
opinion to make any definitive conclusion.

Thanks,

Igor Schein

Dear friends -- If you or an ancestor/relative spent any time in
'Kitchener Camp', a Jewish refugee camp in Sandwich, Kent, United
Kingdom, immediately before or during World War 2, the organisers
of a memorial website are seeking memories, photos etc.

My parents spent time there in 1939, but please don't write to me -
I am merely passing on this information on behalf of the organisers.

More information can be found on their fledgling website below.
