Today is #GivingTuesday - a global day of giving back - and it falls less
than a month before Chanukah when we kindle lights of hope. In this spirit of hope for the future, please give back by supporting JewishGen, whose mission is to "preserve our history for future generations." Because of JewishGen, and its more than 1,000 volunteers, people can learn about their Jewish family history - no matter their location! With the simple click of a button (and good internet access!), JewishGen allows people to access information that previously would have required a tremendous expense, and countless hours travelling the world. In the words of one donor: "Sadly, the family members who might have answered my many questions have all passed on. Therefore, it is only through sites such as yours that I may find answers." Our goal is to raise $18,000 *today* to help subsidize our services. A gift of any amount will be greatly appreciated, and collectively, make a tremendous difference. As in past years, gifts of $100 or more will qualify for our Value Added Services. FREE GIFT! All JewishGen users who contribute to our Giving Tuesday campaign - no matter the amount - will receive an exclusive link to view the upcoming film "My Dear Children" (which is scheduled to premiere internationally in theaters and on PBS in 2018). This is the first-ever documentary about the anti-Jewish massacres that swept what is today Ukraine, Moldova, and Belarus immediately following WWI. These massacres are an often overlooked piece of Jewish history, and we hope you find this film informative and meaningful. (A trailer can be viewed here: https://tinyurl.com/JGMDC). TAUB in Poland

Judith Goldsmith
Hello Genners!
I am searching for ancestors who might have immigrated to the USA and then decided to leave for Palestine or another country. I cannot locate them in the US databases except for a possible immigration record in 1920, listing Roza Taub (mother) age 33, travelling with her 9 year- old son Kleimens to join her husband Slowatskie Taub in New York. Both were born in Poland. My ancestor's maiden name was Roza Perlmutter and she was born 1885 in Lancut, Poland. Her parents were Meilech Perlmutter born 1857 in Lancut and Chewet Geiger born 1858 in Blazowa, Poland. Roza was married to Schebsel Taub prior to 1906, as they had a child, Joel, who died soon after birth in 1906 in Drohobych. Roza and Schebsel Taub were living in Drohobych as recorded in the 1910 Rzeszow Census. Roza had several siblings and her father who died in the Holocaust. I did not find the Taubs among those listed in the Central Database of Victims in Vad Vashem. II would greatly appreciate it if anyone can help or point me in the right direction. Thanking You, Judith Goldsmith Researching Geiger, Turnheim, Weiss, Zuckerberg, Unger, Frankel, Borgman, Perlmutter, Gerber, Kaletsky |

Passenger Manifest of Joseph Wallach
#ukraine
Marilyn Levinson
Dear fellow researchers
My grandfather Joseph or Jossel Wallach was born in Lipkani Bessarabia Russia in 1890. Family history has it that he left c. 1912 to escape military service. Joseph had two brothers Max and Moidel. I found Max's passenger manifest which has him listed I think under Nisen Boloch. He immigrated to the United States in 1913. I know the name Wallach is often spelled Boloch, the last residence is correct and the name of his father, Moishe is correct. The birth date is about 2-5 years off depending on which subsequent record one looks at. I was told that only Max and Joseph immigrated to the United States. I found a passenger manifest for a Mordel Wallach, who is from Lipkan has a birthdate of 1890 and an arrival date of 1912.He says he is going to join his brother Jossel Wallach. At first I assumed that since Joseph was evading military service, he used his brother's first name on his passenger manifest but then saying he was joining a Jossel his own name seemed strange to me. I cannot find a passenger manifest for a Joseph Wallach, or anything close to that name that has the right dates or place of birth. I am wondering if I have reached the wrong conclusion, and that unknown to my family Moidel did immigrate, as well as Jossel and Max. I would appreciate your help. Marilyn Levinson Spring Lake N |

Interesting Ancestral Discoveries
#ukraine
David Goldman
Greetings, Jewishgenners.
I was finally able to actually obtain documents going back to the 1870s and even to 1852 >from Zhitomir. One of the unusual findings was that my great-great-grandfather (the rabbi of Mayaki near Odessa) had been married in Zhitomir a first time at the age of 21 to a divorcee who was 26 in 1873. I had previously obtained a record for his marriage to my great-great-grandmother in Odessa in 1881. Of course no one in my family ever heard about this, and it appeared extremely strange that a young 21 year old would marry an older divorced woman (who must have died or divorced him by 1880). Am I correct (ahem) in assuming that the only probably likelihood is as a young religious Jew in 1873 he fell in love with a married woman who then divorced her husband in order to marry him? I realize this happens nowadays and could always happen, but it still seems unusual, especially since the obvious first choice would have been a MATCH made with a young virgin and not a divorcee who is about 5 years older than him. They then had a child in Zhitomir in 1876, whose fate is unknown. In addition, another record shows that his own father died of an "abscess" or "ulcer" at age 55 in 1890 (meaning his father was 17 when he was born in 1852). What might we call this illness today in 2017? Thanks, David Goldman NYC |

Dear JewishGen Family,
Today is #GivingTuesday - a global day of giving back - and it falls less than a month before Chanukah when we kindle lights of hope. If you are in a position to do so, please help us continue our important work. Our goal is to raise $18,000 *today* to help subsidize our services. If you are in a position to do so, please help us continue our important work.
