1. 33 Seymour Place, London, W1H 5AP FAX 0171 723 5852 2. Why 'so-called' Transactions? They have been published for over 100 years. The Society has also published a separate series called Miscellanies. They used to be printed separately but in more recent years were bound with copies of the Transactions. 3. Each volume has its own Index and I know of two consolidated ones: one dealing with publications during the years 1893 to 1945 and a later one (I haven't the later one to hand). The Index covers both the Transactions and the Miscellanies. Family of del VALLE. My Index for 1893-1945 does include entries for Abigail del VALLE in Miscellanies vol II page 77, and for Isaac del VALLE in Miscellanies vol III page 91, and Transactions vol VII pages 275, 276. I do not know if these are substantial references or merely passing mentions. There may be other references to the family in the later Index which is temporarily mislaid in what is laughably called my office at home. Since thee were so many replies to the request for information on Central
Islip State Hospital on Long Island, I thought this would be of general interest even though I have already responded privately. from Ricki:Boy, did I ever open a flood gate when I asked about this place. I've received over 50 posts >from people who also are interested in what kind of information I can get >from CI. It must have been a repository for all sorts of "problem Your tale is a rather common one. My ggm was there for 25 years and died there in 1946. I live locally so I'm very aware of what the hospital was all about. It no longer exists today as a separate entity. There were 3 extremely large psychiatric hospitals on Long Island: Kings Park State, Pilgrim State and Central Islip State. CI was the oldest and largest. They have been greatly downsized and today exist as one. There is a medical records building that houses the records of all the patients. It is likely the person you are seeking has microfilmed records. If he died there, they should be able to provide a copy of his death cert. If you run into a problem with that, let me know and I can give you further leads. If you write or call the information below, they should be able to locate the records and tell you what they have. They can be quite cooperative or quite evasive. Ask for a photocopy of his admission card and any genealogical information found in the record. However, if you have specific information you want, such as descendents, be specific in your letter. They will probably ask for proof of relationship as they are extremely concerned about the legality of the privacy issue. There is extreme sensitivity on their part. The charge was (is?) $ 10 for a copy of the death cert. Write to: Milo Maldonado, RN Chairperson, Medical Records Access Review Committee Kings Park Psychiatric Center 998 Crooked Hill Road West Brentwood, NY 11717-1087 (516) 434 5046 FAX (516) 434-5107 If you learn that he was there in 1915 or 1925, there is a NYS census that would have him listed. Often, in the 1925 census there is an address given prior to admission. Central Islip State Hospital can also be found in the federal census for 1900, 1910 and 1920. It is located in Suffolk County, NY. I plan on building a database of all Jewish people who were in CI for all the census years. This is a very large project and I haven't really started the entering in my database. Hopefully, I will have a good chunk of it ready for the Summer Seminar in NY. PLEASE do not ask me to do a look up as at this point I would have to do the same search as you. As my database builds, I will post a notice on JewishGen and do look ups at that point. The interest in this posting is encouraging to get me moving on it!
