JRI Poland #Poland Where is Usznica?
#poland
Hello!
In researching my KANET family I searched for Chaim JELEN and found him in the 1897 Lomza District Census using JRI-Poland. He is listed as having been born in Usznica. I searched for Usznica using both the Town Finder and the Gazeteer on JewishGen but could not find anything to confirm where this town is.I'm hoping that someone on this list will be able to point me in the right direction. Thanks so much for any ideas you can share. JRI Poland #Poland Looking for Koveler, Poland?
#poland
Hello!
Relating to my KANET family I was given information that Chaim JELEN and Tema Rivka Golombowicz married in Koveler, Poland. I couldn't find this marriage when searching JRI-Poland so decided to search the town. The closest I came on JRI was Kowala mentioned in the Radom Book of Residents. I found nothing using JewishGen. I'm hoping that someone on this list will be able to point me in the right direction. Thanks so much for any ideas you can share. Ukraine SIG #Ukraine RE: Records from Ukraine (Odessa) - and Britain?
#ukraine
SarahRose Werner <swerner@...>
Does anyone know if/how it's possible to get records of immigrants arriving
in Great Britain, similar to the Ellis Island records in the States? One of the complicating factors in the situation Lina describes is that Sarah GOLDBERG and her children emigrated to the States not directly from Russia but rather >from Glasgow, Scotland. Her youngest son, Barnett, was born in Scotland in about 1912. When the family emigrated to the States a year later, they supplied the anglicized names they were already using in Scotland. If a passenger manifest could be found for the family's arrival in Great Britain, that might show their original names, as the Ellis Island records usually do for immigrants who arrived >from Russia directly. SarahRose Werner Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada GITTELMAN: David-Gorodok RABINOWITZ: Chepovichi Subject: Records >from Ukraine (Odessa) From: "go415510510@..." <go415510510@...> Date: Sun, 16 Jul 2017 19:46:19 +0700 X-Message-Number: 1 Hi all, I'm looking for help getting records >from Ukraine. I've had no luck with finding anything on JewishGen. The names I have are: Chaje MAIL and Moishe/Moses SCHECHOWITZ married in Ukraine around 1871, probably in Odessa, possibly in Volochisk. I believe that Chaje originally be >from Trysten and Moses may be >from Korets. Their daughter, Sarah Schechowitz born in Odessa, July 15, 1872. Married in Odessa to Emmanuel GOLDBERG, March 1892 or 1893. They had four children born in Odessa, Hyman (Chaim) Dec 4 1892 or 3, Harry b. Oct 4 1897, Ruth Mary Aug 2 1901, and Jacob April 20 1905. Unfortunately I only have the anglicized names of most of them. I am not sure what Schechowitz or Mail originally was, nor do I know any of the younger sets "real" first names. I sent an email to archive@... but have not gotten a response. I am going to visit Odessa next month and am wondering if it would be worth hiring a researcher there. If so, does anyone have any idea of how much I should expect to pay or have any recommendations for researchers? Thanks! Lina

DNA testing questions
#dna
Dahn Cukier
Hello,
The following questions are not covered the FAQ of the company I used for DNA testing. Why would siblings have different matches. My sister and I have a different number of cousins, and of 2 sisters, one is a 3rd cousin, her sister is a 4th cousin. Does anyone have an estimate how long would the computers need to scan all the DNA entries and find first matches? (I expect more and more new tests, but for the first scan?). If anyone has knowledge of Ancestry, MyHeritage, 23andme, FTDNA and others, please share your suspicions. Please send answers directly to me. Regards Dahn Cukier

Sheldon Dan <sheldan1955@...>
I think that I found a lead in trying to trace the life of Eli
BIRNKRANT, the brother of Adi Birnkrant and possibly a relative of my wife's grandfather Zisha Birnkrant. Apparently Eli did move to Cleveland after his first wife's death. He was involved in a congregation called the Lake Shore Jewish Center. He remarried a woman named Lena. Lena died at age 56 in 1936. Eli apparently survived his brother Adi. He had six children by his first wife: Harry Howard Birnkrant (1885-1956), Samuel Birnkrant (1889-1972), Hannah Birnkrant Colbert (1892-1961), Esther Molly Birnkrant Jacobson (1894-1980), Fred Carl Birnkrant (1899-1948), and Joseph Birnkrant (1903-1917). If anyone in the Cleveland area can help me with this research, I would appreciate it. Sheldon Dan sheldan1955@...
