JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen Saul Wahl Katzenellenbogen
#general
isak@bm.technion.ac.il
There are to the best of my knowledge no historical sources for this
legendary "grandmothers stories" ("Bobe Mayses" in Yiddish). This ahistorical story is cultivated and cherished usually for the purpose of "Yichus". There are only a very few Polish historical sources mentioning a rich Jew, Saul Wahl, in Polish Saul Judicz, who had business transactions with the Polish nobility of his time including the Polish king, nothing else than that. The father of the history of the Jews in Poland, Prof. Meyer Balaban, has published a short article about Saul Wahl Katzenellenbogen. Regards Isak Gath, Haifa
