Hello Miles,

try research on the following website (perhaps using an online translator):

or contact them. They may be able to help or give further advice.

I have ancestors in Friesland,  I would suggest that If you are checking Friesland for this person, you extend your search from Groningen to Leeuwarden in The Netherlands and also to Emden in German Friesland.  Frieslanders did not and do not notice the Hannover Netherlands boundary though Spain had to when they were trying not to let go of The low Countries. These three large towns are of an identical style of street plan, fortification and canals, also their museums are linked and they are Frieslanders first and Dutch or German a long way second.  You may find them in either Sephardi or Ashkenazi Congregations, certainly they do mix and sometimes intermarry there and in England.

I also checked the nearby province archives of Friesland, Groningen, Overijssel for Salomon and Israel without success. Openarch.nl links all databases so I checked it separately in-case something slipped through the net, but still no mention of either person. Variations Morganstern, Morgenstein also checked. Nothing on DutchJewery or Familysearch either.

Re: Did Buchenwald prisoners really have a bank account??? #holocaust

My three uncles were detained in Buchenwald from the 10th Nov 1938 & released on 2nd Jan 1939 and have a similar document. I understand that relatives could make deposits towards the prisoner's eventual release, a form of tax. Interestingly, all three arrived in Australia on the infamous Dunera.

In principle, there were possibilities to send parcels and money to a person who was in a concentration camp. The number/quantity per month was prescribed very precisely.

I am engaged in an investigation of the shtetl Sudargas/Sudarg for the years ca. 1830-1840. For this, I am combining tax files from the Warsaw Archives (AGAD) with data on persons from the All Lithuania Database. I would like to get in touch with the person who collected this data for the ALD. Furthermore, I am interested in further contacts with researchers who deal with Sudargas or who do research on persons who came from Sudargas.

Thanks a lot, Rodney! That solves most of the puzzles. Unfortunately, it looks as though the death records themselves are not available on line. So getting further information will require either visiting Vienna or hiring someone to make inquiries for me there.

Ben,
The document you show is dated to 1938, when the Nazi policy to the Jews was more about making life difficult, encouraging them to leave. The package of documents also shows that he was released on 9-Jan-1939. It is likely that he emigrated, as this was often a condition of release after Kristallnacht (although I note he was detained a month before that date).

Miles,
St.A. is short for Standesamt (Registry Office).
According to https://www.geschichtewiki.wien.gv.at/Standesämter
standesamt 28 in Vienna in 1941 was Währing, so death certificate 1131 of 1941 from that registry office should be Max's

Found mention of this book on GoogleBooks.  Perhaps there is some information in this book to help you in your search.

Re: Where candlesticks are from #general

I have a set of three candlesticks, exactly the same as those shown, also no identifying marks on the bottom.  I was told they came from Europe (late 1890s) with my great-grandmother's generation, emigrating from Podhajce/Mikulince near Tarnapol in Galicia.

Translation Request from German or Polish, not sure #translation

zfast@...

The death record referenced below is for Malka Cymerman who died in 1867, Plock, Poland.
I am seeking information about her marital status at the time of death as well as any information about other family members mentioned in the record.
Thanks you so much.

Re: Where candlesticks are from #general

I, too, have a very similar set of candlesticks. When my mother's mother died, I took them from her house. I always assumed that they had been her mother's and had been brought from Odesa, but I have no evidence for that. They are just short of 10" high, and the base screws off. I cannot find any markings on them that might indicate a maker.
