A new Project Fund on the Rom-SIG site - Storojinets!
#romania
Rosanne Leeson
Dear fellow Rom-SIGgers,
An important new project has been announced by Brooke Schreier Ganz, to clean up and document the Jewish cemetery in Storojinets formerly in Bukovina, now Stororzhynets in Ukraine. It is only 12 miles/20km southwest of Czernowitz (Chernivtsi). No 18th or 19th Jewish century records are known to have survived >from here, just a few early 20th century ones. But the cemetery has 18th, 19th and 20th century burials, and it is in decent shape. Smaller Bukovinian towns may have also used this cemetery. Brooke's project is raising money to document it all, photograph and transcribe everything. They are raising money. All photos and data will be made available as public domain, and will also be sent to JOWBR, and anyone else who wants it! Student interns >from the Chernivtsi Museum of History and Culture of Bukovinian Jews are doing the work, riding 45 minutes to the site. They will be taking at least 2 photos of every tombstone, and will even mark the locations on a newly-created map of the whole cemetery (section, row, number). The newer half of the cemetery is in very good shape, but the older half is full of weeds. The money needed to be raised (about $2000.) will be to pay for the clean up of the weedy area, and also includes the cost of eventual transcription/translation work. And all donations are tax deductible through JewishGen! Here is the link to the Rom-SIG JewishGen-erosity site so you can make those donations to the Storojinets Cemetery Documentation Project : <http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/v_projectslist.asp?project_cat=20> Rosanne Leeson Coordinator Rom-SIG

Looking for a very specific record in a specific LDS film relating to Stanislwow
#galicia
Steve Jaron
Hi,
I hope everyone who was there had a good conference. Anyway a recent discovery at my cousin's house after the conference has given me the death date for my 2nd Great Grandfather Aron Moshe TILLINGER. So now I am wondering if anyone of you out there in Gesher Galicia-land has easy access to LDS film 2439556 and can find the death record for Aron on 26 March 1929. Based on the date it should be close to the end of the first section or the beginning of the second section. I can always order the film myself but I figured I would try this way first. Please respond privately and thanks in advance! -Steve Steve Jaron sjaron@... https://stevejaron.wordpress.com/family-history/

Yeshiva in Kiev between the two world wars
#ukraine
דוד נ.א.
There is a rumor in the family grandfather Shlomo Zalman Geller (born
1897) studied at a yeshiva in Kiev. Does anyone know the Yeshiva held in Kiev between the two world wars? I know that for the period certain, there was a Yeshiva Navahrudak (Alter of Novardok died there), but is there some sort of list of students >from that period? Maybe there were other Yeshives? There are lists of students? Thank you very much in advance David Nesher Israel

Hi Bessarabian researchers,
I want to congratulate all who came to Seattle. It was a terrific time with wonderful lectures, seminars and conversations. I would like personally thank Matthew Mishory for a great film he brought to the conference. Thanks to all who participated in the discussion after the film. We had a very meaningful conversation about the film and preservation of Jewish heritage in Moldova. I also think that we had a very good conversation at the Migration to Bessarabia lecture. You can read excerpts >from the this lecture as well as Bessarabia Maps (see below). Many thanks to all volunteers who helped at the ShareFair - Bessarabia SIG table, who were active at the lecters, our Board Meeting. (Bessarabia SIG Luncheon with presentation: Bessarabian Maps >from 18 century: >from Military Topographic maps to town and shteitle maps. I think that this was a very good session with a lot of feet back >from our group. As I have heard after the session, our members did not know about some of the maps I presented at the lecture. Here is a direct link to the set of slides for the presentation: www.jewishgen.org/Bessarabia/files/conferences/2016/BessarabianMaps.pdf Lecture: When, Why and Where >from the Jews Arrived in Bessarabia/Moldova. (35-40 people came the session). That topic one was always on my list, and this is a culmination of my research. Here is a direct link to the set of slides: www.jewishgen.org/Bessarabia/files/conferences/2016/MigrationToBessarabia.pdf) For me it was a place to meet old and make new friends. During the conference I had an important conversation with representative >from FamilySearch, who said that FamilySearch are going back to Moldova Archives to photograph more records >from Moldovan Archives, and that we agree of mutual help to each other organization. More details I will write later when our agreement will be finalized. All the best, Yefim Kogan Bessarabia SIG Leader and Coordinator
