JewishGen Discussion Group #JewishGen (Scotland) 1881 Census Free Access; Scotlands Places Free to Search Places
#general
Jan Meisels Allen
In late September I posted about the new Scotlands People website and for
the first time one can research free of charge the index to records including statutory records of births, deaths and marriages. At the time I missed that you can now search and view the LDS transcription of the Scotland 1881 census completely free. You must register (it's free). If you are a registered user, you will need to login in with your password and you will be prompted to set a user name and password email address and password. If you have not registered previously you need to login in. To register go to: https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/. The site has videos on how to login, register, checking your account and about the website. To access the videos go to: www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/exploring-new-site Once you have registered and to access the census go to the advanced search: https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/advanced-search. Click on Census returns and under select click on 1881 (LDS) and you'll see that all the results are free to view! While it says "view" you will get the full transcript. More Free Scotland Searches: Another Scottish site is Scotlands Places where you can search across three national databases to access historical resources relating to places throughout Scotland. The user is able to enter a place name or a coordinate to search across these collections or they can use the mapping in the website to both define and refine their search. Information is >from the following sources: Historic Environment Scotland (HES) The National Records of Scotland (NRS) The National Library of Scotland (NLS) with support >from School of GeoSciences at the University of Edinburgh and the Scottish Government. To search go to: http://www.scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/ Enter a place name into the search box, or elect a county >from the map on the first page. Thank you to Peter Calver, Lost Cousins.com for advising us about the census and ScotlandsPlaces. Scotlands People is a pay-per view site except for those areas mentioned above that are free. To read about the cost of credits and how they are batched see: https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/our-charges Scotlands People is a partnership between the National Records of Scotland and the Court of the Lord Lyon.
