Start here: http://www.radixindex.com/databases/pv001001.shtml It's a Trade Directory. Lists the Trades or Professions and who is registered as doing that in a particular town (based on how they do currently arrange trade licenses in the Czech Republic, the directory comes >from data the relevant dept. in every city hall where one registers a trade... a specific license is needed for every trade.) Radix's first level of search is as you can see at the County level The trades are listed in Hungarian, German and French. So Dentist is Fogorvos, Zahnarzt (literally "tooth doctor"), and... Dentiste (the use of French was I suppose mostly related to exporters...) As I recall, the indices are free but the images cost a bit. (The payment system is odd but seems trustworthy). I've found ancestors here in Saros, Ung and Zemplen counties. If this person is >from what's currently Slovakia but also possibly close to Szabolcs in Hungary, I would perhaps look first in Zemplen (which is in both current Slovakia and Hungary) Abauj and Torna Counties... If you don't know the Hungarian name of a modern Slovak town, check Hungarian Wikipedia first using Slovak name and then also http://www.radixhub.com/radixhub/gazetteers/1877 and to find where it is using the Hungarian name http://www.radixhub.com/ See also https://hu.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Magyar_Kir%C3%A1lys%C3%A1g_v%C3%A1rmegy%C3%A9inek_list%C3%A1ja_(1881%E2%80%931918) - Todd, Davis, California

Rony Golan asked about directories or other sources that might list a
pharmacist, Aladar Roth, in Slovakia before WWII. Some directories with relevant coverage are searchable at genealogyindexer.org, including an enormous 1931 business directory for all of what was then Hungary. If you perform the following search, you will find several entries for people with this name, which you can examine to determine whether any might be yours: "Aladar Roth"~2 The ~2 matches the name in both surname-given and given-surname order. Since Roth is a very common surname, including the given name as above is a useful way to search, but, for less common surnames, I recommend searching with surname only, as some sources only include a first initial or abbreviated given name. In general, you can leave all search options at their defaults, unless you are overwhelmed with too many results. In that case, try changing the "Any Place" option to "Hungary" (which includes sources with coverage of modern Slovakia), "Any Collection" to "Directories" (excluding yizkor books and other non-directory sources), limiting by date, etc. Among the sources searched are several Hungary Pharmacy Calendars, but the accuracy of results for these is relatively poor, due to the poor quality of the scans. Also, there are more Pharmacy Calendars online that I have not yet made searchable. For both reasons, when looking for pharmacists, you might want to browse the Pharmacy Calendars at http://www.gyogyszeresztortenet.hu/gyogyszereszek-evkonyve/, in addition to searching at genealogyindexer.org. I am working on research for my brother in law. His grandmother was Anna
Lynn. Through DNA I was able to find one of her siblings Morris Lynn Both were >from Vetley/Wetly Poland. I found someone else on Jewishgen who was researching the family name of Lin in Vetley. She has information on a Yosef and Lea Lin born around 1870. I was trying to find out if there would be information on Yosef's father so that I may be able to see if Anna Lynn's father, Nachum and Yosef's father were siblings or cousins. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance, Myra Spiwak Chicago Il

Brick Wall - Unique Surname

Elaine Farran
Would appreciate assistance with a family mystery.
Although one of my ancestral surnames, SZAMPANIER /CHAMPANIER, is unique, I'm stuck in my research. I learned that this surname's origins can be traced to Konskie, Poland, as far back as the late 1700's. Records show that many family members left Konskie around the 1850's and settled in Piotrkow Trybunaliski and Lodz, while others remained. I have been in contact with one other family (#2) bearing that surname. They live in the US. However, their ancestors adopted the Champanier name in Poland before emigrating to the US because, as their family stories tell it, they believed their original surname was too long. In addition, their family came >from a region relatively far >from the Konskie or Lodz areas. We have determined that WE ARE NOT RELATED. I also learned that Polish Jews moved further eastward to the region near or in Kiev in search of a better life, including opportunities for farming, which led me to another branch of my family. This Champanier branch lives in Argentina. Their ancestor, SAMUEL CHAMPANIER, emigrated >from Kiev in the late 1800's and settled in one of the gaucho colonies near Buenos Aires (Rivera). His wife's name was name was MARIA CHEPOWA. We know we are related and NOT related to family #2 - but can't figure out the ancestry to match. I have not been able to find any documentation for Champanier in or near Kiev. Would very much appreciate information. We will be meeting in December and hope to establish the common ancestry. Thank you Elaine Farran Long Beach, NY Researching SZAMPANIER, CHECHINSKI, FRYSZ, Konsie, Lodz Piotrkow Trybunalski

Hello Genners,
Just a quick note to say that, what is now known as Knockaloe Farm, on the Isle of Man, served as a big internment centre for those deemed by the British to be Enemy Aliens, particularly during the First World War. If interested, please see : http://www.knockaloe.im/ Some files of internees are available on request. You can obtain application forms by writing to the volunteer, Alison Jones, who runs the Knockaloe site: ajones@... . Please bear with Alison; she also has a daytime job.
