I want to thank all those who responded to my request regarding the
spelling of towns. I think I have enough information to send to my relative to be able to put this question to rest. Again JewishGenners have come to the rescue with answers to our questions. What would we do without you. Thanks again Marilyn Silva KISTENBERG, TREITER, GRZEBIEN, ZALOSZYNSKI all in Warsaw Province MODERATOR: And what would JewishGen do without its generous donors? One way to thank JewishGen and the JewishGen community - and insure its continuity - is to make a donation to JewishGen-erosity. ** No amount is too small. ** Visit http://www.jewishgen.org/ and click on "Donate" in the green bar at the top. |

In a first step I suggested to Nancy, directly to her, to have a look at http://allfont.net/cyrillic/ . Then I self downloaded just one example of cursive (pay attention . . *not* italic !) cyrillic fonts, namely Cyrillic Parsek I found very easy to read and very close to a handwritten text. Moreover I sent to her an example of cyrillic text I self wrote with a.o. the character "gué " cursive uppercase. Unfortunately it's impossible to reproduce here all those texts because using plain text is mandatory. Of course I'm ready to discuss the thread with other peoples, also to learn >from them about other possibilities - I'm sure there are, because I didn't spent a big time to my research. Offering Lookups (Again) at NYC Municipal Archives/NY Public Library
#general
A. E. Jordan
I have been away >from the look up for a long time while I relocated
and now that I am barely settled in am going to try and do lookups again. I will be available in Manhattan next Tuesday to get copies of certificates at the NYC Municipal Archives as well as likely to be at the NY Public Library. If anyone needs something specific please contact me and we can discuss if I can help you. Anyone who has availed my services in the past knows I have a sort of set routine. On these trips I am basically working as your eyes and legs for people who can not get to the Archives or Library themselves. Generally what I do is transcribe certificates where you have already found the numbers >from the online indexes or sometimes check for missing records with the tools at the Archives. Yes I can retrieve the City Clerk marriage licenses -- ie. the ones where the indexes went on line earlier this year. As a reminder I can only access births through 1909, marriages through 1937, City Clerk licenses through 1929 (after that requires going to the marriage bureau); and deaths through 1948. Also I can do naturalizations at the NY Supreme Court which is in the same building and probates for Manhattan. For someone who made a request I might also try NARA this time for naturalizations. At the Library I can access the newspapers, city directories, NY Census and various databases plus sometimes retrieve books and make copies. I ask everyone to cover the costs including the printing of certificates (if you want them) which is $11 each plus a little for me to help offset my travel costs (budgets are tight right now as I just incurred a big move expense so I can give time but you need to cover costs for me.) Same for copy costs at the NY Public Library. What I do is take the details you have and in the case of the Archives I actually look at each certificate on the microfilm before placing the copy order to make sure it is what you said it was. Sometimes I have to clean up errors in transcription of numbers, research >from your info to find the correct certificate number. etc. I pay for the certificates and then trust you to reimburse me. I can either scan and email or mail certificates. I type notes and email. Please understand that generic searches when you only have vague details (like Moshie married Sally but that's all I know) or are trying to breakdown a brickwall that you have been working at for years requires an investment of time beyond a quick retrieval and I cannot include in this offer. I am always happy to discuss any and all research questions involving NYC area look ups. Allan Jordan MODERATOR: Please contact Allan privately. |

U.K. Grave of Solomon (Shulem) PACTOR?

Dear Genners,
I am trying to locate the grave of my great grandfather's brother. He resided in London and died in 1944, age 77. His death index states his registration district is Essex South Western and his Inferred County is Essex. I will be in England shortly and would like to visit his grave. How can I find out where he is buried? His grandson has no idea. His wife Sarah (Sureh) died in 1932, age 64. Her registration district is Hackney, Inferred County London. I would think they're buried in the same cemetery. Thank you for any assistance you can provide. Tina Pachter Levine NYC Searching: PACHTER/PACTOR - Siemiatycze, USA, London, Liverpool |

I am a descendant of the Milner family of Drohicyn, who are also related
to the Warshawsky and Eisenstein families of Drohicyn. I know this to be the place in Belarus and not Poland because of the Yizkor book, which was created by relatives of mine. Also, all of my research has pointed me to locations in Belarus. I have no other information that points to any place as far west as Poland that would suggest the other location. I took a quick scan through the names in the Yizkor book but did not find Simanowski. I would suggest having a look yourself though as I only skimmed very quickly. Ken Falkson Cary, IL |

Help needed before IAGJS

Laura L <pinkluna@...>
Hello! I'm going to my first conference, and hoping to make the best use of my
time. I've been researching for several years, but still have many loose threads and brick walls. I'm researching my grandmother's family in Belarus, specially the MEIEROVITZ family of Smorgon, and the CEGIELNICKA/Zigelnitka/Tzgelnitka family of Lida and Woronowa. The Meierovitz family may have owned a factory, My great grandmother, Elka, had at least 4 sisters, Bashe (married named Rabinowitz), Sara (married name Kac), Gimple and Devora. There was a brother named Nacham. Parts of the family were in Minsk, Vilna, and Kovno. The parents were Eliezer and Sheina. I believe that Elka Meierovitz married my great grandfather Chaim (Hyman) ZIGELNITKA (CEGIELNICKA) in Vilna in 1904 according to her naturalization certificate. Their Americanized names were Ella/Elka and Hyman SIGEL/SIEGEL. I am hoping that someone here might be related to the family, or have some ideas about specific resources to utilize while at the IAGJS. I have been unable to track down their marraige record on JewishGen, or the birth records of their daughters Lillian (Leah) 1910, Rivka (dob around 1912) and Macha (Mildred) around 1913, all born in Smorgon to the best of my knowledge. Please contact me if you can help, I would really appreciate it. Thank you so much. This is a great list. Thank you for your help.
