In the 1880 census for Tarnobrzeg, I found my family..but I have not been
able to be sure. This is the names I have:

Israel SCHLISSEL
wife Hene
their son Mojzen
wife Gilike (EDER)
grandson Mekiende
Meitko
Pinkes
Taube
Gitel
also living in the house Abraham Eder
wife Biendke
son Hein Ber
Neche
Chaim

I have connected with everyone's family but Mekiende and Meitke. I am
not sure which became Mordichei. Can anyone tell me which is Mordichei?

Sorry about the spelling. I am missing the other one.

What is difficult for me are names in Yiddish.

On my Tarnobrzeg page everything have is listed.

Please advise on how to understand names??

Dear friend,

Many of you are excited to go to the conference in Seattle. I am too, even
for me it is 6th or 7th conference.

What was the most interesting for me in these gatherings is to talk with
more experienced people at the forum, and the second was helping others with
the questions, translations, etc. etc.

Do you know that at all conferences there were special translating services
provided in many languages? You can bring a post card, or a photo with
inscription to the conference, and most likely it would be translated.

At the Share Fair pm Sunday >from 1:30 to 5pm you can talk with knowledgeable
people >from every SIG and other groups at the conference.
Our Bessarabia SIG also is going to participate at Share Fair event. You
could find some printed maps at our booth, and people who may help you.

I am going to be at the Share Fair, and will work with you as I could.
Also I know that many of you coming, and who is going to be on Sunday, I am
asking to help our group, to be part of our team at the Share Fair. You can
pick an hour or two to come to our booth and helping others. I think that
in order to be successful in your personal research, you need to help others
in the area you are familiar with. This is how our organization is working.

If you are not coming on Sunday, and have questions, want to talk with our
Board members, with me, please let me know. The best days would be Monday -
Wednesday.

I also want to see you all on our MAIN day at the conference - Thursday!!
Join us at the Bessarabia SIG Meeting, you also can come to our Bessarabia
SIG Board Meeting even if you are not a member of our Board.
Come to our Bessarabia Luncheon (hopefully you could still register?!)

See you soon at the conference in Seattle http://www.iajgs2016.org/.

Many of lectures, presentations are related to our Bessarabia SIG. The list
of such presentations may be viewed at our Bessarabia SIG websites at
http://www.jewishgen.org/Bessarabia/Conferences.html

We have two great opportunities for you. Both of these are available
through the conference website under "New Registration." Yes, even if
you can't get to the conference, the only way to purchase anything is
through registration. We have to know who you are and we have to be able
to make sure we can contact you if we need to.

1) You can still purchase LIVE! (and you will be able to throughout the
conference and afterwards. the advantage to purchasing now is that you
can view the sessions as they are happening through LIVE! streaming.
Can't arrange your schedule to fit our sessions? No worries - LIVE! for
those who purchase it, is available after the conference is over, on
demand for 90 days - that means you can pick the sessions yo want to
hear (maybe all of the ones on LIVE!) and listen to them as many time as
you want for 90 days.

Check out the conference program to see which sessions are LIVE! from
the conference website. LIVE! is sponsored by Family Search.

2) If you are in Seattle and can't make the conference, why don't you
join us for the opening session on Sunday evening, August 7, and stay
for a fantastic dessert reception. The keynote speaker, Dr. Devin Naar
is sponsored by MyHeritage, and the dessert reception fllowing is
sponsored by Ancestry.com

Both LIVE! and the Keynote/dessert reception are available through the
conference registration. Go to the conference website at

LIVE! Go to registration and choose "new registration to purchase LIVE!
and tickets to the keynote and dessert reception.

Contact the conference chairs (if you need to) through the website.

Info on LITWIN and LAGOON families in London #unitedkingdom

jnblank@...

I'm trying to find information on Hyman (Hymie) and Jane LITWIN, in
London. Hyman was my maternal grandfather Yechiel David MIRMOVITSCH's
half-brother.

I posted a similar request on this mailing list some 11 years ago but
since I have still not found relevant info on this family, I want to
give it another try.

The info I've been able to gather so far:

Hyman LITWIN (variant sp.: LITVIN / LITVINE / LITWINE / LITTWEIN /
LITWER) was born in Russia (prob. in Mogilev district of Belarus) and
emigrated to the UK sometime around the very end of the 19th century. He
is listed, together with his wife and 4m old son, on the 1901 census.

He was married to Jane (1874/5-1952, maiden name LAGOON), also
originally >from Russia . Whether or not they immigrated together, I
don't know. The couple lived in London's East End - in 1901 and till at
least 1920 they lived in 70 Royal Mint St. Hyman was a member of the
(Federation) Scarborough St. synagogue. The couple had 7 children but
their descendants, some of them still living in London, have no
information regarding Hyman's and Jane's pre-UK background.

Both Hyman and Jane are buried in the Federation's Edmonton cemetery
(I've obtained photos of their tombstones).

I have not found Hyman's (nor Jane's) naturalisation record listed in
the NA on-line catalogue, having tried several possible variant
spellings (in the 1901 census they were listed as "Littwein" !).
Not being too familiar with available UK (London) genealogical records,
I'd very much appreciate any suggestions, ideas, references etc. on how
to find more data on this couple - and especially regarding when, and
from where, Hyman and Jane moved to London.
Info on Jane's LAGOON family might also prove to be of help.

Please reply privately (unless you think your mail might be of more
general interest).

In honor of my parent's memory, I am making my book, Courage of the
Spirit, available for free eBook download through Amazon Kindle >from
August 1-August 5.

August 1 is the date, according to the Jewish calendar, of the passing
of my mother, Irene Weinberg, who survived Nazi persecution while hiding
in the open in Lwow and Warsaw. I am doing this special offer in honor
of her and of my father, Rabbi William Weinberg, who served as the first
State Rabbi of the German State of Hesse after the Shoah .

To download your copy, please go to Amazon.com Click here to go to the
page at Amazon. Click on the "Buy Now" button ( not the "Read for Free"
which is for Kindle subscribers only). The "buy now" will cost $0.00 if
you chose to do so during the Free Giveaway Time. Please feel free to
pass this on to your contacts, as I want to make my father's
incredible story available to a broad public.
You don't need a Kindle to read it. The Amazon website has a
link for information for reading Kindle on any device.

My book, Courage of the Spirit, tells of my father's saga in the
decades up to and through the years of the Shoah. It is a story that
spans thousands of physical miles, by freight train and on foot, >from
the Galician Shtetl to cosmopolitan Vienna and Berlin, and to Stalingrad
and central Asia and back as my father kept one step ahead of the Nazi
armies. It is a story that spans the mental and emotional journey >from
the medieval Shtetl, the great empires, and the weak democracies and
totalitarian regimes that followed, and finally, to freedom.

We are shown a window into life in a Nazi prison and concentration camp,
the day-to-day life of Jews in Nazi Berlin, and the vagaries of survival
under Stalin's totalitarianism.

It is my plan to tell my mother's story as
well as the story of the rebuilding of Jewish communal life in Frankfurt
in the post-war years. I will be basing my work on documents now
archived at the United States Museum of the Holocaust( recently placed
on-line by the Museum).

Please download the ebook >from Amazon >from August 1 through August 5,
and forward this email to your friends and contacts as a way of helping
me honor my parents and spreading the message of Courage of the Spirit..

Shalom and regards,
Norbert

Comments on Courage of the Spirit:

I'm so glad my book reached you. I just finished reading Courage of the Spirit and
I'm simply overwhelmed by the extraordinary story you relate! Your book is an extraordinary
contribution to Jewish thought, as well as the triumphant story of survival in the face of
unimaginable odds. I'm not sure where to begin. I'm actually speechless at the moment.
As a writer, I can appreciate the painstaking research, which went into this book. Every
page was an emotional and intellectual revelation to me. Your writing style is not only
inviting and accessible, but also intellectually engaging. It's as if you consciously set
out to engage those who have a passive interest in the Jewish narrative of the twentieth
century, as well as the intellectual who is well grounded in the history, but may lack an
appreciation for the unfolding human drama. (Ralph Georgy, author of Absolution: A
Palestinian Israeli Love Story)

Congratulation on getting the first volume of your trilogy published! It´s great that the
book is finally available for researchers. I will definitely recommend the book for the Jewish
Museum´s library, other institutions and some Czech historians/researchers who are
interested, especially in the aftermath of the Shoah and the postwar time.(Mgr. Monika
Hankova, The Archives of the Jewish Museum in Prague)

In Rabbi Norbert Weinberg's reckoning of his father's tumultuous, tragic past,
history is no arid enterprise, no bloodless recording of facts and figures. Interspersing
personal reminiscence with detailed historical rendering, Courage of the Spirit brings the
horrific twentieth century to life through the story of Rabbi Wilhelm Weinberg, and his
journey through Nazi camps and Soviet terror.(Saul Austerlitz, author of Sitcom: A History
in 24 Episodes >from I Love Lucy to Community)

Courage of the Spirit by Rabbi Norbert Weinberg is a major contribution to the
literature of the Shoah by transcending the cold facts of those dark days into a personal
account of the experiences of the author's father. Rabbi Weinberg meticulously traces his
father's arrest by the Nazis in 1939 and brings us full circle to his being named the first
State rabbi of Hesse. Throughout those terror-filled days, the rabbi retained his faith and
determination to survive. The book is a must reading to all those who want to capture and be
inspired by the inner strength and resilience of the Jewish people as reflected in the life of
Rabbi William Weinberg. (Rabbi Norbert Weinberg, Rabbi of the Adams Street Shul and
author of A Time to Tell: Stories and Recollections of a Rabbi >from Kristalnacht to the Present ,
''and When The Rabbi Laughs'': A Delightful Compendium Of Contemporary Rabbinic Humor,
and numerous other books.)
Courage of the Spirit was recently featured on Advocacy Heals You, with Joni Aldrich on
W4CS.com, the Cancer Support Network, as themes >from the book offered moral and spiritual
courage in life's struggles; the interview can be heard at:

Re: Where is Bergen County Cemetery, Paterson, NJ - 1923 burial #general

Barbara Mannlein <bsmannlein@...>

Although the original poster asked for pvt replies, I am addressing this
to the group as others may have similar queries and made similar
missteps in their research.

1. I googled "Bergen County Cemetery, Paterson, NJ", hoping to find an
entry about the cemetery,
2. Then "3700 Ft. Hamilton Parkway, Paterson, NJ"

All the listings that come up concerned Brooklyn, New York streets.

3. Then it dawned on me: Paterson, NJ is in *Passaic County, *not* Bergen
County.

4. The info you gave said he was buried in Bergen County Cemetery, 3700
Ft. Hamilton. The transcription I saw on FS says only "Bargen Co Cem" and
gave no state.

Have you seen the a copy of the actual death certificate or a
transcription?

5. I googled the undertaker: Albert M Kasdan. A host of references
pop up. A man by that name was a member of the Union Temple in Brooklyn,
NY as late as 1968. The temple bulletin, which is online, cites its Member,
Martin D Kasdan of Boulevard-Riverside Chapels,800-522-0588, is the
temple's official Funeral Director.

I would do 2 things:

1. Contact the temple and/or Martin Kasdan. Ask them to check their
records for your GF's membership and burial. Their records may be
more complete than what the undertaker scrawled on the NYC form.

2. Get a copy of the death certificate: Order FHL film #2,031,947 >from
your local FHL for $7.50 and when it comes, locate and make a copy of
certificate #15062. Or order it >from NYC (15.00).

Please let the group know what your further searches reveal.
