IGRA Meeting on May 30 in Petach Tikva, Israel The Lockdown of the US Social Security Death Index #general

Elena Bazes

Tuesday, Monday, May 30th at 20:00 in Petach Tikva, Israel
Join us for the next meeting of the Israel Genealogy Research Association (IGRA).

The Lockdown of the US Social Security Death Index: Lessons to be learned by the
Genealogy Community.

Like all else, genealogy is impacted by its environment. Political and
technological considerations are operating in Genealogyland as never before, with
the Law of Unintended Consequences leaving its mark, for better or for worse.

As a result of the political and technological processes, significant restrictions
have been placed upon an invaluable United States information resource, the Death
Master File (DMF), the commercial version of which is familiarly known to
genealogists as the Social Security Death Index (SSDI).

The genealogy community was in many respects caught off guard by the storm that led
to the restrictions now placed upon the DMF/SSDI, and it took much political
capital and muscle to mitigate the damage, which could have been far worse than it
developed to be.

Ken Ryesky will discuss the lessons to be learned by genealogists >from the DMF/SSDI
fiasco, including the need to be mindful of the operative politics and technology,
the need for responsible practices, and the need to positively promote genealogy's
public image.

Location:Private home in Petach Tikva. Space is limited, so registration is a must.

RSVP to Gilda Kurtzman gildak@...
Cost: IGRA members-Free Admission Non-members-NIS 20

As stated previously in our correspondence...these would be registered
in the department where the act occurred. You would need to hand
search the correct 10 year index tables. However, for the latter 3 you
might well find the death date and place written on the birth act. For
Seine-St-Denis the birth index is only up to 1902 (1903-1912 should
be indexed but it doesn't appear on line that I could find).

I suggest you contact
http://www.annuaire-mairie.fr/acte-de-naissance-saint-denis-93.html
and ask how you order the 3 birth acts. If these give the place and
date of death you can then go to the relevant town hall and get the
death act-if in France, or follow it up if abroad.

Best wishes,

Sherry Landa (Oxford, UK)

Western Sephardim DNA Project #general

Michael Waas

Hi,

I'm looking for potential participants to participate in our study of Western
Sephardi paternal DNA lineages. Thanks to a generous grant, testing kits will be
provided at no cost to the participants. Eligible participants are those who are
direct paternal line descendants of the Western Sephardi community.

What is the Western Sephardi community? The Western Sephardim, were arguably the
original transnational people in the age of Imperialism and Colonialism,
transcending religious boundaries and empires. The Western Sephardim include the
communities of Amsterdam, London, Livorno, Venice, Bordeaux and Southwest France,
and their daughter communities in the New World in Curacao, Suriname, and North
America. There were also Western Sephardim who ended up in the Ottoman Empire,
most notably in Izmir, Salonika, and Tunis.

Who is eligible? Anyone who is >from those communities of direct paternal descent is
eligible. For example, I am a part of the testing cohort, representing the Vaz
Lopes family of Bordeaux and Amsterdam. As part of the testing, we will also need
an accurate paternal genealogy, with as much information as you can provide.

The goal of this project is to try and shed light on the origins of the Western
Sephardi community and to establish a strong dataset of DNA results, grounded in
strong archival research and results that would lead to further intensive studies
of Sephardim.

Please contact me if you are interested or know someone who might be eligible. We
aim to have a cohort of at least 50 men tested. I am happy to answer any questions!
Your privacy is protected and the results of the study will be published.

Thanks for your interest!

Seattle Jewish Theater Company at the 36th IAJGS Conference #courland #latvia

Janette Silverman <cochairs@...>

This summer's 36th conference of the International Association of Jewish
Genealogical Societies in Seattle will feature a performance of the
highly acclaimed play >from Door to Door. The heart-warming, bittersweet
comedy will be staged by the Seattle Jewish Theater Company, a local
theater group devoted to Jewish-themed plays.

Written by award-winning playwright James Sherman and directed by SJTC
artistic director Art Feinglass, >from Door to Door follows the lives of
three generations of a family of Jewish women, >from impoverished
immigrant to successful American. The performance will take place on
the evening of August 9 in the Grand Ballroom of the Sheraton Hotel in
downtown Seattle, where the conference will run >from August 7 to 12.

As director Art Feinglass notes, "The play takes its title >from the
Hebrew song L'dor V'dor, '>from generation to generation.' It examines
what it means to grow up Jewish and to love those closest to, and most
like, ourselves." An audience discussion with the director and cast will
follow the performance.

During the conference, SJTC will also present Jewish History Live in
which actors will portray Jewish immigrants who came to Seattle from
areas as disparate as Turkey, Rhodes, and Russia in the early 1900s, and
Germany and Czechoslovakia in the 1930s. They will engage conference
attendees in conversation, tell their personal stories and share their
dreams as new immigrants to America.

This summer's IAJGS conference will also feature a Jewish Film Festival
put together by leading Jewish film scholar and teacher of cinema Eric
Goldman. Other highlights include the opening night keynote address by
Dr. Devin Naar, chair of the University of Washington Sephardic Studies
Program, and a resource room accessing a vast array of databases. And,
as at previous conferences, remote streaming of selected programs will
be available through LIVE!
