Alex Feller to discuss Cadastral Maps at May 22, 2016, JGS of Illinois meeting
#general
events@...
"Cadastral Maps as a Genealogical Resource" will be the topic of a presentation
by Alex Feller at the Sunday, May 22, 2016, meeting of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Illinois. His presentation will begin at 2 p.m. at Temple Beth-El, 3610 Dundee Road, Northbrook, Ill. The JGSI meeting facilities at Temple Beth-El will open at 12:30 p.m. to accommodate those who want to use or borrow genealogy library materials, get help with genealogy websites or ask genealogical questions before the main program begins at 2 p.m. For more information, visit http://jgsi.org/ or phone 312-666-0100. The main speaker for this meeting, Alex Feller, a board member of Gesher Galicia, says "Cadastral maps and landowner records are sources of information useful to a genealogist interested in creating a fuller picture of a family's life." House numbers found in vital records and property lists can help confirm connections between families and aid in tracking the movement of families through time, he says. When used in conjunction with cadastral maps, house numbers can show the location where a family lived. The cadastral maps also show locations of Jewish cemeteries, synagogues, and schools. "These maps can be compared with current satellite images of the town to show where a family's house would have stood. All this information also helps the genealogist to imagine how families within a town may have interacted with each other," Feller says. In 2012 the speaker became a board member of Gesher Galicia, a non-profit organization that promotes and conducts Jewish genealogical and historical research for Galicia, a province of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, which is today part of southeastern Poland and western Ukraine. Also planned for this JGSI meeting is a short presentation by JGSI webmaster Ron Miller, who will discuss JGSI's online Jewish burial databases. Submitted by: Martin Fischer Vice President-Publicity Jewish Genealogical Society of Illinois |

Johannes Reiss who is the director of Eisenstadt's Jewish museum
http://www.ojm.at/ dedicated his vacation (everybody needs a hobby!) to taking some photos of Trieste's Jewish cemetery. There are ca. 12 000 headstones in that cemetery. The first 162 headstones are online now: http://www.ojm.at/blog/juedischer-friedhof-triest/ The headstones which are partially inscribed in Hebrew were translated by Mr Reiss who also put 322 names (index) including photos online. Naturally, lots of names >from former k.u.k. Austria are to be found such as Morpurgo, Neuhauser, Ascoli, Brunner, Eppinger, Arnstein... Good luck for your search! Traude Triebel A-2700 Wr.Neustadt |

Research and Translation Continuity Fund - An Update
#lithuania
Barry Halpern
Donations to the LitvakSIG Research and Translation Continuity Fund
have now exceeded $45,000! We want to once again thank all of our donors and supporters. You are helping to ensure the continuing discovery and preservation of our LitvakSIG heritage! We recently added a new feature to the Family Honor Roll that enables display of either photographs or documents. Thus, when you become a donor to the Continuity Fund, you may choose to honor an individual or family by including a digital photo or document. To see what this looks like, you can go to this link: https://www.litvaksig.org/research/research-and-translation-continuity -fund/honorary Please note that you'll have to "cut and paste" the link to get to the website. Of course, there's no requirement to add a digital document but the ability to do so is there if you'd like to take advantage of it. We do have a request for all readers of the LitvakSIG Digest: whether or not you've donated to the Continuity Fund in the past, we appeal to you to "spread the word" to any of your family or friends who may be able to help support us! Without your generosity some very important genealogically valuable material will continue to sit in the Lithuanian Archives. If you can, please make a donation at https://www.litvaksig.org/join-and-contribute/ Go to the bottom of the page and choose the "Scroll" option with the words "Research and Translation Continuity Fund." Thank you so much for your consideration. We really do appreciate it! If you have any questions about the Continuity Fund, how to donate, or any related topic, please don't hesitate to contact us at the email addresses below.
