Sephardic SIG #Sephardim DYM family Sephardic connection?
#sephardic
Francine Helene <fayhen@...>
Hi all,
I'm exercising my very rudimentary genealogical skills, research Sephardic heritage, to try to find any traces of my husband's family, the DYM family. He understands that it is Sephardic, having lived in Spain. The Dyms are Kohens, and were rabbis for many generations. Family lore has it that family members also played an official role of some type within the Jewish community in Spain. So far we have not found documentation of any of the Spanish part of this story, picking it up in Galicia centuries later. I haven't found the name listed among Sephardic Jewish names, and don't know how to gain access to pre-expulsion public records. Can anyone recommend an approach or set of sources? Thanks, Fran Jacobs |

Dear genners,
In 1923, my father Benjamin REJTMAN immigrated to the u,s. With his mother, and two of his younger siblings. His oldest brother Aron-Wolf REJTMAN did not, but was alive in 1923...and then the trail goes cold. What we know: Aron-Wolf REJTMAN , was registered as born on Feb. 4, 1899 , his father, my paternal grandfather was Idel Benumenovich REJTMAN, his mother, Shprincja Duvidovna GOLDENBERG., the family lived in Cherniachiv. I am hoping that one of my fellow genners might provide a clue to how I discover if he married, had children, and when and here he died and is buried. Many thanks in advance, Jerry Reitman Chicago, Il 60647 |

I am researching my ancestor - Mordecai (also known as Marks) Tannenbaum. I believe
this tombstone is his and it might hold clues which could help us trace his family to Poland but I need help to read the Hebrew sections. I know it is very worn and have not been to see it in person yet, so unfortunately I only have this one photo. It is on ViewMate at the following address: Http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM46224 Please respond via the form provided in the ViewMate application. Thank you very much for your time. Hannah Davies Cardiff |

Seeking research guidance regarding my 4th great-grandfather Rabbi
Lipot/Yehuda SILBERMAN, b. 1796 Sedziszow Malopolski, (Galicia) d. 1864 Fagaras, Romania (Transylvania). He was the first rabbi of Fagaras >from 1855 to 1863. Two threads of research: 1. His rabbinical tree, family in Galicia, and schooling. I believe he is mentioned in the Meorei Galicia however technical difficulties with the website jgaliciabukovina.net and my inability to read Hebrew have been barriers to accessing that content. I have all 19th century vital records for his family in Fagaras after about 1820 but none from Galicia. 2. His writings. Per the Encyclopedia of Jewish Life (eds. Spector and Wigoder, p.376): "Yehuda Silbermann (1855-63) kept a diary of communal events (still extant and referred to as the 'Fagaras Diary') that served as a source for the history of Transylvanian Jewry." I have searched the archives of the Jewish community in Brasov, Romania, The Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People, and the National Library of Israel Manuscripts Division which all report they do not have the diary. I have written the Memorial Museum of Hungarian Speaking Jewry in Israel but have not had a response yet. Thank you kindly for any insights, Karen Popernik Aitken Ke.aitken@... Seattle, WA |
