Surname of ZELAT
#general
Allen Kurtz
My Fellow Researchers,
I recently encountered the name of a family ancestor on the Gombin (Gabin, Poland) Book of Residents. She is listed, in a transcription of the record, as Chana ZELAT. In other records she is listed as Chana, daughter of Nawtali Hodys. I am somewhat puzzled by the name Zelat. Perhaps is it a variation of names derived >from the Polish word for gold (Zlot, Zlat). I have pondered other names found on various databases including Szlat, Szalat, Szlott, Szlajt and others. I have thought that it may be a corruption of the surname Zoladz (acorn in Polish). I have also thought that the name might be a transcription error. Does anyone have any other thoughts on the surname Zelat? Could it have any other meaning that would attach the word to a given name and found after that name? Thank you in advance for your wealth of knowledge and willingness to share the same. Allen Kurtz Mahopac, New York, U.S.A.

A caution regarding use of 1790-1880 US Census sheets
#general
Stephen Katz
Anyone researching people or families in the United States should be
interested in an article in "Vita Brevis," an online publication of the New England Historical Genealogical Society (NEHGS). The article, "A game of Telephone," was written by Lindsay Fulton, NEHGS Director of Research Services. She points out that the original census enumerations >from 1790 to 1880 were copied two or three times, with one copy filed with the county and another with the federal government. The census sheets filed with the federal government, which are the ones that are today viewable on microfilm or on genealogical websites, were in some cases the originals and in other cases the copies; and there are sometimes differences between the information on an original sheet and on its corresponding copy. The article provides some tips to determine whether a particular sheet being examined is the original or the copy. The article may be accessed at http://vita-brevis.org/2016/02/game-of-telephone Stephen Katz Researching: KATZ (Novograd-Volynsk, Ukraine and Boston, Mass.); TEPPER (Novograd-Volynsk and Rovno (Rivne), Ukraine, and New York City); KAPLAN (Stakliskes, Lithuania, and central Mass.); KABACHNIK (Butrymonis, Lithuania); VITKIN (Kaunas, Lithuania, and Boston,Mass.); GREENBERG/BLOCH, Vilna, Lithuania, and Boston, Mass.); BLUM, LEVINE (Boston, Mass.) www.stephenrkatz.com

Weekly Feature: Yizkor Book Spotlight
#austria-czech
Groll, Avraham
Dear Friends,
Beginning this Friday, we will resume posting a brief spotlight from a Yizkor Book that JewishGen has translated. As many of youknow, the Yizkor books contain vivid accounts of topics ranging from communal daily life, to the struggles faced during the darkestdays of the Holocaust. If you are not familiar with the JewishGen Yizkor Book Project, please click here: http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/faq.html The spotlight will be posted weekly on Friday mornings, at 7:00 am (EST), on our facebook page. You do not need to be a member of facebook to view this page. The url is: www.facebook.com/JewishGen.org I would like to thank Mr. Bruce Drake (Silver Spring, MD), for volunteering his time to do this each week. Mr. Drake has been involved with JewishGen since 2006. He is currently coordinating the translation of the Kovel, Poland Yizkor Book (more details here: http://www.jewishgen.org/JewishGen-erosity/projectdesc/yb_kovel.html) while also overseeing the Voynilov, Ukraine KehilaLinks site (http://kehilalinks.jewishgen.org/voynilov/voynilov.html). We hope that these weekly spotlights will provide a greater understanding about the lives our ancestors led, and grant a more profound appreciation for the heritage we share as part of the broader global Jewish community. If anyone would like to reach Mr. Drake directly, with comments or suggestions for future spotlights, please email him at: bdrake100@.... Wishing you all the best of luck with your research. Avraham Groll
