Re: three-month Atlantic crossing by wooden sailing ship in 1880s? #poland #general

Hallie Metzger, you can check ship manifests at the time to see the departing and arrival dates. This is an article discussing voyage times from the Royal Museum Greenwich which catalogues all things maritime.

You can find records of flight and ship transport from DP camps after WW2 on the Arolson Archives web site.  On a different note, I found an inscription on an AEF card that a family was absent from muster.  They next turned up in Palestine.

Seeking help with town name - Possibly near Kiev, Ukraine or Zhitomer, Ukraine #unitedkingdom #records

michelle moshelian

This is a record from England showing the place of birth. Kiefe has been crossed out but I am thinking that it was written there for a reason, and I’m thinking that it meant Kiev.

I read “Jitomir’ which seems to be a name for Zhytomyr which is 140 km from Kiev.
And for the actual town I am reading “Rutna” but I can’t find any location on a map near Zhytomyr or Kiev that is called Rutna.

Any ideas?

Obtaining Documents from Lithuanian Archives #lithuania #records

Harlan Levinson

What is the best way to get records from the Lithuanian Archives? They ask for just a small amount, under E20, but if you do not have a Euro checking account its not easy to get them the money. What have people done, short of wiring the money? Any suggestions?

I was able to find Fond 728 online at Family Search, but cannot find Fond 361. I did find the translated records in a spreadsheet at LitvakSIG, but would like to get the original, if possible. (I am not sure how the translations works, so not sure why one Fond would be online, but other similar fonds would not be)
Thank you.

Major new Szczuczyn records extraction project started #poland

Aaron Roetenberg

Long-time Szczuczyn and area researchers will be pleased to learn that Jewish Records Indexing - Poland has undertaken a huge new “Phase 3” project to fully extract all available Szczuczyn birth, marriage and death records from 1826 to 1914 in the Łomża branch of the Polish State Archives. In addition, we created indices (with fathers’ names) for the many years of later records. A number of years of Alegata records are also included.

We have received about 5000 fully translated records today with dates from 1871-1910. Not all years survived.

     Births – 1871-1875, 1880-1906

     Marriages – 1871, 1879-1910

     Deaths – 1871, 1882-1906

     Marriage Alegata 1911-1912

The translator is working on the next batch of records now and the next update is expected late this month.

As Town Leader, it would be my pleasure to send you a full description of the Phase 3 project and explain how you will be able to obtain these extracts as well as digital images of your family records up to 1914, before they go online.

I look forward to hearing from you.

In general, airline passenger lists are included in "immigration" or "passenger lists" collections on the major genealogy websites.  For example, the manifest for an uncle of mine that flew from Havana to Key West, Florida can be found in the "Florida, U.S., Arriving and Departing Passenger and Crew Lists, 1898-1963" collection on Ancestry.  The original source was "Passenger & Crew Manifests of Airplanes Arriving at Key West, Florida, Feb 1946 - Jul 1948, Dec 1957 - Nov 1969", NARA Micropublication A3580. Perhaps this one in Lithuania for the town on the 2nd census line, info found at:
186.0 miles WNW of Vilnius 54°41' N 25°19' E
Nemirseta, Nemeržetà, Nėmeržata, Nimmersatt, Nemerzhara, Nemerzatė

The JewishGen Gazetteer
has a few possibilities for "Sverna" when doing a soundex search.

Svirniai, Svirnay, Svirni  110.6 miles NW of Vilnius 54°41' N 25°19' E
Severėnai 129.9 miles WNW of Vilnius 54°41' N 25°19' E
And, other possibilities also.

However, none of these towns are near Kovno.

You may want to search for other documents that may list these town names more clearly, such as naturalization.

Good luck in your search,
Sherri Bobish

GROSSMAN in Lodz 1920s - Aron and Chana with children Israel, Feivel, Chaim, Chemia, Lieb #poland

Joseph Lonstein

I'm trying to find a GROSSMAN family living at 9 Mickiewicza Street in Lodz in the 1920s.  Parents were Aron GROSSMAN (son of Moses and Liba, b. July 22 1881 in Strykow possibly buried in Lodz cemetery 1938) and Chana Blima BESSER (daughter of Chemia and Devorah, b. June 5 1885 in Belchatow; she was a sister of my ggm Liebe/Lena BESSER).

Their children living with them listed on their 1920s Lodz registration card were Israel (b. June 8 1907 Lodz),  Feivel (b. March 4 1909 Lodz), Chaim (b. April 12 1913 Lodz), Chemia (b. July 12 1918 Lodz), and Alter Lieb (b. July 10 1920 Lodz).

I've searched all the usual databases and can't find any clear hits.  Family lore is that all may have been murdered in the Shoah, because there was no contact after the late 1930s with my immediate family living in upstate New York.  If all were lost in Shoah, though, I haven't found them in the Yad Vashem or other online Shoah databases.  They're all on my tree but no "hints" have come up.

Thanks for any help,

Joe Lonstein

In response to Sue Fifer, my son was married on 4th September 2021 - he had a civil wedding in a garden on a rural organic farm in the English Lake District, and the meal after was in the farm barn  The local Registrar explained there were no official wedding registers any more as it was all online now. However,  local registrars were now introducing their own paper versions (for a fee) and this was what was signed, and appeared in the wedding photographs.
