Hi all,
This past September I visited Zagare (Zhager) Lithuania to attend the Three Day Jewish Culture Festival there. One of the films on the program, was Uncle Chatzkel, a documentary made by Rod Freedman about his uncle who lived in Vilnius and was a survivor of the Holocaust. Rod's family, who had immigrated first to South Africa, and then to Australia, had lost track of his grandmother's brother, Chatzkel. In 1997, Rod, who is an Australian filmmaker, travelled to Lithuania to make a movie about his uncle. Chatzkel Lemchen was an intellectual and lexicographer of international reputation who had written three Lithuanian dictionaries. He mastered the written language better than most Lithuanians. Besides that, he was a charming man who touched the lives of many people. On our annual film night on Jan. 11th, the Jewish Genealogical Society of Montreal showed the movie "Uncle Chatzkel". The audience was captivated by this video and it reminded me how wonderful it is. I would like to share this with other researchers because it would be a welcome addition to any Library, or Genealogical Group. I have no personal or commercial interest in this video, but if anyone would like more information about it, please e-mail me privately and I will be glad to help you. SLIOZBERG family in Paris
#france
Igor Schein <igorschein@...>
I was told by a family member that his grand-aunt (maiden name
ZOLOTAREVSKY) was married into the famous SLIOZBERG family. I started researching it, and found out that the patriarch of the family, Genrikh Sliozberg who died in Paris in 1937, was married to Ida Zekel from Poltava. However, he had 2 sons who both followed him inemigration >from Russia after 1918. Mark was a lawyer. Anatoly was a physician, a member of French Resistance and was awarded a medal in 1947. I am looking to find out the information about their families- wives, children etc. Perhaps one of the wives was my relative. I appreciate your help. I have extensive experience in Jewish genealogy of Ukraine and Lithuania, but this is my first real excursion into Jewish genealogy of France. Igor Schein USA |

Panelists who are experienced in Jewish genealogy research will help guide you on ways forward in research and will give advice on places to look to break through a brick wall. Please send questions in advance to JGSofMD@...; a selection of those questions will be addressed by the panel. Please be specific in what you are looking for and what you have already tried. Give as much background information as possible. In addition, we'll have an open floor at the end for additional questions. Our panelists are: Lara Diamond - Lara is President of JGSMD and has been researching her family for more than 25 years, since she was too young to have a driver's license and had to rely on her mother to drive her to the National Archives. She has traced all branches of her family back to Europe and most lines multiple generations back using Russian Empire-era records. Most of her research is in modern-day Ukraine, with a smattering of Belarus and Poland. Her genealogy blog is at http://larasgenealogy.blogspot.com. Carol Rombro Rider - Carol has been interested in researching her family ever since she discovered that almost no one else in the world shared her surname. Forty years later, using every conceivable resource, she has discovered the difficulty but delight in research. Learning to 'think outside the box' has made all the difference in the world. Her research areas include Baltimore, Ukraine, Lithuania, Belarus, Poland, Mexico, Israel, and Romania. A trip to Romania several years ago was the highlight of her research. The program is free for paid members and $5 for non-members (applied to membership fee when a visitor joins JGSMD) after their first meeting. Refreshments will be available. Please check our web site at www.jgsmd.org for late updates and for the time, location, and program of future meetings. Susan Steeble Baltimore, MD JGSMD Public Relations |

Holocaust survivor looking for Max (Maniek) Weisberg
#france
Victoria Barkoff
During the Nazi occupation of Poland, my friend, Michael, survived on
his own >from the ages of 8 to 14. After the war, Michael became friends with Max (Maniek) Weisberg at an orphanage in Zakopane, in southern Poland. Max would be in his mid-to-late 80s now. When last contacted, he was living in Lyon, France with his wife and two children, but that was several decades ago. Michael is thinking of attending a Children of the Holocaust reunion in Paris next year, and would love to make contact with Max or his family. If you have any ideas about how to locate Max/Maniek Weisberg or his family, probably in France, please let me know. Victoria Barkoff Montreal, Canada |
