South Africa SIG #SouthAfrica Request for information - surname changes
#southafrica
Hilde en Dennis Kahn <denmor@...>
A recent mail >from JewishGen termed "MYTHBUSTERS", informs its members as
follows: Myth #4: Our family surname changed at Ellis Island. RESPONSE: No, it was not. Passenger lists were filled out at the port of embarkation by clerks hired by the steamship lines, or by the ship's purser, and then checked by U.S. customs or immigration authorities upon arrival. Thus, the names on these passenger lists are the European, pre-Americanized versions of names. No names were changed at Ellis Island. Immigrants changed their own names afterwards, to more easily recognized surnames, those which might match their already arrived relatives, or the name of someone who sponsored them to come to America, or even a name with perceived greater "yichus" or renown. A common myth in my South African family is that their surname was changed on arrival. For example, PIL (pronounced piel, the Dutch/Afrikaans word for penis) was changed to PERL to avoid embarrassment or worse. But also changed to BERMAN (buurman in Dutch/Afrikaans) and BERGER (burger or burgher in Afrikaans/Dutch), in answer to questions about their status. So three PIL brothers have different surnames. I have no official records of their name changes. I look forward to hearing whether the procedure described in the USA also applies to SA. If not, what the official procedure was on arrival in SA. Thanks in advance, and my best wishes, Dennis KAHN

Japanese Official Works to Identify WWll Jewish Refugees
#general
Jan Meisels Allen
Jewish Genealogist Mark Halpern asked me several weeks ago to put him in
touch with AP researcher and Jewish genealogist Randy Herschaft. Many of you know Mark >from his work with JRI-PL and Gesher Galicia and an officer of JGS Greater Philadelphia and have seen that Randy is a source for a number of my postings. Mark has been working with Akira Kitade to help identify the persons in photographs of seven people whom Mr. Kitade's former associate, Tatsuo Osako, helped escape >from Europe in the early days of World War ll. Mr. Kitade and Mark were in New York earlier this month as Mr. Kitade wrote a book (in 2012) about his colleague and the seven photographs. While in New York Mr. Kitade met with the children of three of the people in the photographs. With the help of research in Japan, the International Tracing Service and the United States- and using online databases and archives--- a truly international effort-- four of the seven people have been identified. The one man and three women who made it to the United States have been identified were Jewish, another identified woman was not Jewish. The fate of the other two women is not known, nor is their religion, although it is very likely they were Jewish. . The researchers plan to continue trying to identify the two women and have asked Yad Vashem to publicize their photos. Photos of all 7 people are included in the story and perhaps you can help if you recognize who they are. The seven people gave their photos to Mr. Osako as a thank you for helping them. Mr. Osako was a tourism clerk based in Tsuruga (Japanese port city) who assisted European refugees making the voyage >from Russia's Vladivostok to Japan before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. He distributed money to the Jewish refuges provided my Jewish agencies. Mr. Kitade said he wrote the book as he wanted the, "Japanese people and people of the Jewish communities in the world to know about the important roles played by those ordinary Japanese citizens." To read this remarkable story and see photographs, go to: http://tinyurl.com/ncs5g2f Original url: http://bigstory.ap.org/article/df9afc49358845b881741c3e31300789/photos-wwii- refugees-saved-japanese-official-are-idd Thank you to Randy Herschaft, Associated Press Researcher, for having the AP interested in this story and for sharing it with us. Viewmate document identification - Polish
#general
Bob Fitterman <bobf@...>
I've posted a document dating to 1927 and written in Polish. I could
use some help interpreting it. Using Google Translate I was able to figure out it has something to do with the orphan status of a relative, Icek-Majer RUBINOWICZ of Kosow Poleski. It also seems to indicate something about the loss of records during the war. But what I don't know is what the document says about his status given that he was determined to be an orphan. If someone is able to explain what the outcome of this action is, I'd really appreciate it. http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM43476 Please respond via the form provided in the ViewMate application. Thank you very much for any help or insight you can provide. Regards, Bob Fitterman

(Canada) Library and Archives Canada Released Guide to Sending and Receiving Homes for "Home Children"
#general
Jan Meisels Allen
Between 1869 and the 1930's over 100,000 children were sent to Canada from
the British Isles during what was known as the "child emigration movement". These were orphaned, abandoned and pauper children that were sent by social and economic, philanthropic and church organizations that sent the children to Canada for a better chance for a healthy rural life in Canada. Families welcomed them as a source of cheap labor and domestic help. The Library and Archives Canada (LAC) hold extensive records on the children including passenger lists, immigration correspondence files, inspection reports and indexes to some records held in the United Kingdom. The database provides access to more than 245,000 names of Home Children >from records held at Library and Archives Canada and elsewhere. Searching is by Keywords; Surname; Given Name(s); Ship; Year of Arrival and Code. I have tried several searches with "Jewish sounding names" and have received hits.
