ViewMate translation request German
#poland
eran shayshon <eshayshon@...>
hi there,
I've posted 2 post cards (4 photos) in German for which I need a translation. These are postcards that were sent to my grandmother when she was prisoned in Gabersdorf (Sudetten Deutch), by her mother and brother. I would like to ask anyone who can help summarize this postcard. A complete translation is not required, but the essence - what is generally told in the post card, who else is mentioned in the postcard and in what context. They are on ViewMate at the following address: http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM42566 http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM42567 http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM42568 http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/viewmateview.asp?key=VM42569 Please respond via the form provided in the Viewate application Thank you very much. Enquiry about the fate of Frieda SCHMIDT, born Frieda STERNBERG
#poland
Alexander Watson <a.watson.genas@...>
Dear All,
This is an enquiry about Frieda SCHMIDT, born Frieda STERNBERG in Polgsen, Kreis Wohlau, north of Breslau on 11th August, 1883: a pre-WW2 resident of Breslau. I have some letters dating >from during and just after the Second World War written by my great-grandfather Georg STERNBERG. One letter, sent by my great-grandfather in Breslau to my grandmother, in Britain on 25th November 1940 (sent via the Red Cross ?), states that Frieda had been sent to an institution for the mentally infirm in Lueben. Another, post-war letter, by my great-grand father >from Fueth on 9th December 1946 to his best friend, Felix PERITZ, in Israel, appears to hint that Frieda SCHMIDT was murdered by lethal injection in an institution for the mentally infirm in Chelm, despite the fact that the official explanation was "Herzschwaeche". I have been in touch with the archives on Wroclaw (for Lueben) and Lublin (for Chelm), neither were able to help me. Frieda does not appear as a victim of Nazi persecution in the Bundesarchiv-Gendenkbuch. I have a great-great uncle, Hans FABIAN of Hamburg who was murdered under the terms of the T4 Aktion. It was suggested to me that all death certificates for these, so called, mercy killings were issued in Chelm, so the date, place and circumstances of Frieda's death are, as yet, very unclear. Any suggestions as to where to go >from here to gain a clearer idea of the circumstances surrounding the death of my great-great aunt would be gratefully received. I have also written to the archives of Lezsno and Wroclaw to try to obtain, among others, Frieda's birth certificate : both of these places say that Polgsen, Kreis Wohlau, is not in their catchment area. I have written to the central archives in Warsaw asking them where I might find the documents that I am looking for; they have simply not replied. Any help on this would also be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Kind regards, Alexander Watson, Genas (near Lyon) France Search areas: COHN of Polgsen, Rawitsch & Strasburg DEIBEL of Erfurt FABIAN of Kallies, Maerkisch Friedland, Neuwedell, Berlin and Hamburg, Sao Paolo and Shanghai; ROSENBERG of Neuwedell and Pyritz STERNE of The Bronx, Texas and Los Angeles STERNBERG of Polgsen, Rawitsch, Breslau, Berlin, Shanghai, Erfurt and Fuerth

Emigration from Bessarabia to Canada and the U.S.
#bessarabia
Alan Levitt
There have been some requests for the entire article by Janet Wasserman mentioned
recently on our listserv. Much of it is now on the Bessarabia SIG website which can be accessed at www.jewishgen/bessarabia Go to "Emigration >from Bessarabia" to find it. For those who want to read the entire, very, very long article, you can access it at http://www.janetwasserman.com/from-shtetl-to-park-avenue-inewton-kugelmass-md-1896-1979.html But a warning: There was some corruption in the software coding of the program that Janet used years ago to post her article - so that the article is spread over many more pages than necessary. Sometimes there can be a jump >from the middle of a sentence to several lines down the page. And even splits of words, where the first letter is on one line, and it jumps to the next line with the remaining letters of the word. It is all there, it just makes for sometimes aggravating reading (but worth it in my opinion!) Janet is working on fixing it. Alan Levitt Bessarabia SIG Discussion Group Moderator

Locating Palotza
#hungary
albie.hochhauser@...
My great grandfather and great grandmother emigrated >from Europe to
the US in 1882/3. On the ships' registries their home is listed as "Palotza, Russland" and "Polocza, Russland", respectively. Can anyone help me identify the current name and location of this town, as well as the correct spelling used in the JewishGen Communities Database? Options I have found include Palota and Pavlovce nad Uhom, both in current day Slovakia. Slovakia makes sense because in the all-citizen Hungary census of 1869, they are found in Berzevicze. Albert M. Hochhauser Moderator: The Jewish Communities database has information for only about 6,000 places compared with the JewishGen Gazetteer http://www.jewishgen.org/Communities/LocTown.aspwhich includes close to a million places.
