Hi Michael,

It appears that the first ship with the name SS Noordam began service in 1902.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ships_named_Noordam
"SS Noordam (1902) was the first Noordam, a transatlantic ocean liner of 12,528 gross tons built at Harland and Wolff, operating mostly from Rotterdam to New York between 1902 and 1927."

You can search for manifests for ship Noordam, or any other ship, or search by passenger name, at Steve Morse's portal to Ancestry's database:
NY Passenger Lists 1820 - 1957

The courts that declared people deceased were called Sąd Grodzki,   USHMM has records from the Warsaw Sąd Grodzki in our archives as RG-15.270.  The collection description is at https://collections.ushmm.org/search/catalog/irn73447.  The finding aid, under  supplementary materials, lists the names of the people who were the subject of the cases but it is in Polish.  You can do a search but need to be careful of suffixes that change the spellings of names.  If you find your aunt and uncle you can email reference@... for a copy.  Please include the collection call number, the file number and the names of your aunt and uncle.  You can direct the request to me if you wish.

We have Sąd Grodzki records for many towns/cities, but not all of them contain post-war records.  Some are wartime records and a few have interwar records.  Look at the date field for the time period covered.

You should also consult Polish database SEZAM at http://baza.archiwa.gov.pl/sezam/sezam.php and Polish National Archives digital resources: http://www.szukajwarchiwach.pl/.

Marian

Lynn,

I agree with the other replies, but in this case I suspect the "A" within the annotated number may be referring to an application for a certificate of derivative citizenship.  If so, the annotation is evidence of the process to verify/certify his arrival record, but the entire process would not result in a naturalization record you can find in a court.

If his father could have been naturalized in the US while Wolf was a minor, then his derivative certificate application and related records may all remain with USCIS in a derivative C-file.

Just a suggestion,

Marian Smith

Translator Reflects on Attack in Rivne #yizkorbooks #ukraine

Laurence Broun

Two days ago, there were reported attacks against five railway stations in Ukraine, including the rail line in Rivne. Dmytro -- our translator for the Ukrainian-language version of the Yizkor Book of Mizoch -- lives in Rivne, and clarifies the missiles actually hit nearby Zdolbuniv 10km from Rivne, the regional capital.

Zdolbuniv, he points out, is a town frequently mentioned in the Yizkor Book of Mizoch. He comments, "We couldn't imagine these lands will see airstrikes again after WWII."

Dmytro reports about 40,000 refugees in Rivne. We discussed the need for local support, but he indicates the established NGO's are effectively meeting needs and thanks everyone from the JewishGen community who has been contributing to humanitarian assistance through the major charitable organizations.

Rivne is midway between Kyiv and Lviv. In a book I published about my grandparents' lives (also translated into Ukrainian language by Dima,) we included a photo from the Library of Congress archives of refugees steaming into Rivne in 1920. History repeats.

Jeremy,

There is a Jewish Genealogy Society of Buffalo.  I don't know how active it is, but you may want to contact the organization and see if someone there is willing to photograph the grave for you; I'm sure that offering to make a small donation in exchange would be welcome.  The contact e-mail address is JewishGenBuffalo@...

Simplistic observation that likely has some kernel of validity:

During the Middle Ages in Europe, the erudition centered upon the Catholic clergy and the Rabbis.

The Rabbis went forth and multiplied (and were the desired partners for the daughters of wealthy men), while the priests and monks did not.

Early Antwerp emigrant records (Red Star Line), 1885 #records #usa #germany #general

Michael Rubin

Can anyone guide me to emigrant records from Antwerp as early as 1885?  I've seen material for later years but not that early.  I have a particular interest in the SS Noordam (Antwerp/NY) but others will be of interest as well.
Thank you,

SKULSK Poland
http://www.fallingrain.com/world/PL/86/Skulsk.html

There were periods for which an application  for citizenship  had to to show a legal immigration record.  Form 505 was a filled out by a clerk who confirmed that this was so by checking the ship's passenger list.
See  https://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/manifests/occ/

The years of WWII brought out a rush for citizenship, otherwise aliens had restrictions and had to report regularly.

The study does say "education worked for them in the past",  just the sort of conditions that influence evolution.  Maybe Jewish dna does have an effect, however unpopular that view currently is.

Re: JewishGen JOWBR - Broken Image Link #usa #photographs

Brian Kerr

I asked this question via email quite some time ago (regarding another individual in my family tree) and I was told that there's no image and the link is a type of placeholder for one. If an image becomes available, they will label it that reflects the same jpg name and it will be viewable.

Besides that, I had gave something a shot and performed a search for the Phonetic Surname "Lehman" and Any Field "Cheektowaga".

The results provided the following list of those with the Surname Lehman and the Exact Location of their Burials within the same Temple Beth Zion Cemetery in Cheektowaga, New York.

Lena Lehman - Section 79 | Plot: 02 Joseph Lehman - Section 79 | Plot: 03 Lillian (Infant) Lehman - Section 79 | Plot: 07 Hennrietta Lehman - Section 79 | Plot: 09 Meyer Lehman - Section 79 | Plot: 10

I do hope that this was helpful in some way. :-))

Re: Help with 1910 census, building never enumerated. #usa

Steven

Thank you for your reply, Lee, I got the address from the 1909 city directory, although, when I went back and checked just now, I read 4116. Not sure if 4110 was a typo or just my eyes not what they used to be. However, thee still wasn’t a 4116 Woodland enumerated in the 1910 census.

My apologies,
Steve

Steven,
Where did you originally get the address in question as being 4110 Woodland? Checking the 1912  and 1927 Sanborn Fire Insurance maps it seems there was no 4110 address assigned. The numbers jump from 4106/8 to 4112 on both. The address numbering system changed sometime around 1906, I believe and at that time the location was in the 800s.  Can you find your person in the city directories to confirm?

Re: Help deciphering a ship manifest #records

Diane Jacobs

It looks like he is from Skulak.

The numbers are his intent to naturalize and represent the certificate of arrival when they found his passenger manifest as it was dated 1941 he was probably naturalized 3 or 4 years later in the NYC area. He needed to find the manifest page in order to proceed with the naturalization petition.

It also looks like an X is to the left of his name
Which means he is either on a detained manifest or special inquiry page and you can check those as they are either in the front or the back of the regular manifest pages and you can look to see if you find him there.

Hope this helps.
