Personal name Hanoch or Henoch in Bavarian Schwaben
#general
Jim Bennett
My oldest confirmed ancestor in Ichenhausen, Schwaben was Henoch ben
Baruch Bissinger [1747-1816] >from researching his ancestors for many years I now believe that Henoch was the great grandson of Rabbi Hanoch/Henoch Zundel Pfersee, who was a rabbi in Gunzenhausen and Schnatitach, and himself the descendant of three generations of rabbis in Poland and Germany. *but*, so far I cannot prove this hypothesis--it's based on circumstantial evidence, but lacks certain documentary confirmation. I need the help of expert genealogists now living in the Schwaben region, and the help of fellow genealogist who descend >from the families I mentioned. My ancestor, Henoch ben Baruch had hundreds of descendants--among them in every generation oodles of boys named Henoch. By mid-19th century Many of them used the civil name Heinrich. If anyone can offer me advice, please write to me. Jim Bennett Haifa

clarification on query on Polish law re children of unmarried parents
#general
Helen Gardner
Hi all.
I have received several messages suggesting that the parents had actually had a religious ceremony some time previously and were therefore married in Jewish law - or alternatively that the children were >from the first marriage. Neither of these is the case. In the section of the marriage record which I should have included it is quite clear that the religious marriage was performed the day before the civil record, on 26 Oct 1862. Snip It came to pass in Warsaw on the twenty-seventh day of October in the year of one thousand eight hundred and sixty-two at the hour of half past eight in the morning. Before me, a Civil Registrar for Non-Christian Confession of District Four, personally appeared orthodox Jew Jakob Majer Jeszuron, a lower rabbi ... snip and declared before us that the religious matrimony had been entered into in front of him on the twenty-sixth day of October of the current year by Szlama Ajgengold, the bachelor, and the widow Ruchla Laj Rakower, following proclamation of banns in this district, that is to say, on the thirteenth, the twentieth and the twenty-seventh day of September of the current year by means of posting them on the office door snip The first husband died in 1855, while the wife was pregnant with their 2nd child, a daughter, whose father is recorded as deceased on her birth record. She is not mentioned in the marriage, nor in any other record I can find. As mentioned in my previous email, the bride and groom recognise both daughters (born 1861 and 1862) as their own children, which is the grounds for giving them civil rights. For anyone who is interested, I have received a reply >from Greg Gembala as follows: It wasn't easy, but I was able to find it in one of the digital libraries. Attached find the scan of this particular paragraph on page 128. It refers generally to all children born out of wedlock, as you describe it, that they become legitimate should their parents marry at a later date, if they were declared prior to that as legitimate or latest at the moment of the parent's wedding. A big thank you to all who responded so generously to my posting
requesting Viewmate translations of street addresses in Strasbourg, Alsace. In the course of this exercise, various members generously shared with me online resources for finding the names of streets in the town of Strasbourg. See below for the details. I hope this is helpful with your own research. Barbara Algaze, Los Angeles, California, Algaze3@... ========================> 1) Online encyclopedia - http://tinyurl.com/oc6wvsy 2) A list of the "old names" and the "new names" of streets in Strasbourg, however it is difficult to use as it is not alphabetized. http://tinyurl.com/qh29uf3 3) A link to ANOTHER website that lists ALL the old (German) names of the streets in Strasbourg, alphabetized. Although there is no reference to the new (French) name. However it DID have a reference to a map at the bottom of the page. http://tinyurl.com/mx82p49 4) Description de la ville de Strasbourg, contenant des Notices topographiques ... von P. J. France and US Agree to Compensate Holocaust survivors and Family Members Deported by SNCF During Nazi Occupation
#france
Jan Meisels Allen
The French and United States announced a $60 million fund to compensate
holocaust survivors and family members for those deported by France's state rail company, SNCF during the Nazi occupation. The fund will be financed by the French government and managed by the United States. According to the Washington Post, the United States is waiving its administrative fee for administration. It will be about $100,000 for each survivor and tens of thousands for spouses of those who died in the camps or since World War ll. Amounts for heirs of camp survivors who have since died are to be determined on the basis of the number of years those survivors lived after their liberation. Eligible claimants can choose annuities rather than lump sums. French legislators still have to approve the agreement. The agreement includes the US government to work to end lawsuits and other compensation in US Courts against SNCF. SNCF is bidding for high-rail and other contracts in the US-which can be very lucrative for SNCF. One such contract could be worth $6 billion for light rail in Maryland. State legislators in a number of states have tried to punish SNCF for Holocaust-era actions. SNCF transported 76,000 French Jews to Nazi concentration camps. While SBNC expressed regret they say they had no control over the operations during Nazi occupation. The French government has paid $6 billion in reparations but only to French citizens and some deportees. The new agreement will help compensate US, Canadian, Israeli and some others not eligible for the other French reparations. The French have other international accords with Poland, Belgium, Britain and Czech Republic over compensation for deportation of victims. Thank you to Randy Herschaft, AP and Jewish Genner for sharing this story by the Associated Press.
