Lipkani Cemetery project

Yefim Kogan
Hi everybody,
In one day we already have 4 people in the Lipkani team: 3 - Hebrew translators and 1- Russian. That is great, but we would definitely need more, about 10-15 people. The number of records/photos will be about 2,200. We do not have any lists, tables - we will do them ourselves. I would also ask the group if anyone would like to coordinate Lipkani Cemetery project. I am doing it right now, but very busy with several other projects and the conference. If anyone would like do this, please let me know. Here is a set of skills needed for this project coordination: - familiar with Excel, combine several tables in one; keep copies; - familiar with Dropbox to send and receive files; - keep track of all parts of the project: "first reading", "second reading"; possible some of the images will be sent to ViewMate... - advertise the project at Bessarabia SIG Discussion group and JewishGen Discussion Group. I will still continue to communicate with our photographer in Moldova to get some photos retaken if needed, and also to get the last portion of about 400-500 images. Looking forward to hear >from you! Thank you all, Yefim Kogan Bessarabia SIG Coordinator Researching KOGAN, SPIVAK, KHAYMOVICH, SRULEVICH, LEVIT in Kaushany, Bendery, Tarutino, Akkerman, Kiliya - all in Bessarabia, KHAIMOVICH in Galatz, Romania, KOGAN in Dubossary, Moldova, SRULEVICH in Shanghai, China |

Eli Brauner
The Israel Genealogical Society - Tel-Aviv Dan Branch
The Shaar Zion Municipal Library - Beit Ariela May Meeting---------Bridge to Galicia Guest speaker: Mrs. Marla Raucher Osborn - Historical Cadastral Maps as a Genealogical Source Dr. Eli Brauner "Milestones in Recognition of Daily Life of Galician Families - in Lwow Aspect" About the Lectures: Marla Raucher Osborn: Although many types of maps can be used by genealogists, cadastral maps play a particularly important role since the parcels showed on the maps include numbers. These numbers can be linked to owner records in archives and to tax records, which largely contain these numbers. The maps occasionally also include the names of the property owners. Subsequently, we can learn what properties belonged to the families being researched. This data can shed light on the economic circumstances of the family in the community as well as on the physical changes in the city. Other important uses include identification of Jewish buildings for Jewish heritage preservation and an understanding of the reasons for the historical planning decisions. To demonstrate, the lecture will focus on a map of Rohatyn, dating back to 1846 but the information is relevant to all cities in Galicia. The lecture is in English and will be accompanied by slides translated into Hebrew. Dr. Eli Brauner: Research of many years of the Schrenzel Family from Lwow concluded not only with the creation of a family treebut with a systematic identification of sources for research and development of research methods. The research resulted in the transformation of a standard family tree into a blossoming tree that reflects the family's daily life, property ownership, and relationship with authorities, sources of income, military service and tax payments. Unusually evidence >from the last days of the ancient family was also found. This information, how to invigorate the family tree, is made available to the community of Lwow descendents and the genealogical community as a memory to Lwow residents who were slaughtered by the Nazis. The lecture is given in Hebrew and will be accompanied by slides translated into English. The meeting, which is open to the general public, will have a question and answer session. While there are resources in the Lithuanian Archives for researching the
industrial heritage of Lithuania. one can find quite a number of references online on this topic. There are also a number of museums which focus on this aspect of the Lithuanian economy. One link which may be of interest is: http://msi.lms.lt/ihp/gateway/lt/lt_index.html which mentions that in 1900 there were 4,000 works with 24,000 workers in Lithuania and, in fact, at one time, Lithuania was known to have the largest shoe factory in Europe. Further, the "Vestfalija" metalworks in Kaunas had 1,010 workers which was one of the largest industries in the town. In addition, the main public libraries in Kaunas and Vilnius have resources which may prove of interest too. One site for the Kaunas Pubic Library mentions a number of factories, not all owned or operated by Jews: http://datos.kvb.lt/en/index.php?q=factory&by=1&option=com_paieska&Itemid Ann Rabinowitz annrab@... |

Identifying a ROSENTHAL cousin

Hello,
On Monday I saw a document posted by my second cousin(a budding geneologist) on ancestry. My great uncle Max ROSENTHAL died in the Shoah ,with another brother, his sisters and their respective families. We have information that the son of max ROSENTHAL and vally ELKELES was called Ronald ROSE moved to England prior to WW ll. Ronald ROSE placed their yad vashem entry. The document was a denied request for reparations by the German claims tribunal. This was dated 2/27/2007. The request was placed by max's granddaughter, born in Coventry England , 1945. Is there a way to trace and contact the person who placed the claim. I realize this may be a simplistic question, I ask it in the interest of not reinventing the wheel. The ROSENTHALs were all born in kunzelsau. My GGF seligman was born in nagelsburg. His wife was Elise HOCKENHEIMER. they moved to Mannheim and then to Berlin where the max ROSENTHAL family lived. My GF berthold was one of 11 children, Half immigrated, the other half perished in the Shoah. Many thanks, Maralee Joseph maraleejoseph5@... |

Secrets and Revelations: Reclaiming Our Lost Families
A conversation with Mani Feniger and Jim Van Buskirk Tuesday, May 13 at 7 P.M. -- FREE Jewish Community Library 1835 Ellis Street, San Francisco For two Bay Area writers, the unexpected discovery of a hidden family past sent them off in unforeseen directions. When Mani Feniger discovered a lost 1932 photograph of her mother, it led to revelations about her Jewish ancestors' lives in pre-Nazi Leipzig and clarified the choices her mother made to survive as her privileged world shattered. After Jim Van Buskirk's mother showed him a suitcase of his Parisian opera singer grandmother's memorabilia, he understood the role that his family's secret Jewish heritage might have played in their saga of kidnapping, death, and divorce. Join them in conversation as they discuss their research and transformative journeys across decades and continents. Mani Feniger is a therapist, speaker, and author of Journey >from Anxiety to Freedom and The Woman in the Photograph, winner of the 2012 Best Memoir Award >from the Bay Area Independent Publishers Association. Jim Van Buskirk, co-author/co-editor of four books, is looking to publish his family memoir, My Grandmother's Suitcase. His writing has appeared in a variety of anthologies, magazines, websites, and radio broadcasts. Jim was a presenter at the 2010 IAJGS Conference in Los Angeles. They examined rare 18th century Jewish records in the Austrian State Archives and after a short stop in Krakow, to give a presentation at the JCC to the local population trying to discover more about their Jewish roots, they journeyed to Przemysl and toured the Polish State Archives. Once in Ukraine (after walking across the border!) escorted by Alex and Natalie Dunai, they made research stops at the Lviv and Ternopil archives, and visited Grzymalow, its ruined synagogue, cheder and Jewish cemetery. Learn about the trip's highlights and the challenges of archival research in foreign locales (>from white gloves to burnt documents and moldy dust) and discover the exceptional opportunity to connect past to present through investigative genealogical research and shtetl travel.
