ViewMate translation and historical questions related to it

Jessica Zering
Hello all!
I've posted a Austrian marriage record in German (I believe) for which I need a translation. It is on ViewMate at the following address ... http://www.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/viewmateview.asp?key=32705 I also have a couple of questions related to this file: 1. Regarding the use of the word "recte": in what order do parental surnames generally go? For example, my great uncle's last name is Ziering recte Langer. Is "Ziering" the surname of his father and "Langer" the surname of his mother, or is it vice versa? Is there a set order, or is it just up to the person writing the birth record for the person which way the surnames go? 2. My great aunt and uncle were religiously married long before this marriage record came into existence. What would make them (or any Jew in Austria) decide decades later to get legally married? Thank you so much! Jessica Zering Spokane, Washington, USA pharmsciencegirl@...

I am looking for information on family SCHWARTZDORF >from Ottynia, Galicia, former Austrian Empire. There are records for Samuel, age 35, tailor, arrived 1906 >from Ottynia, and his wife Scheindel, arrived May 22, 1907 with son Abram, age 9 . Two girls, Baile, age 16 and Taube, age 13 Schwarzdorf >from Ottynia have arrived also in 1907 but on March 16. Re: given names

David Ellis
Ruth Fenichel (rfenko@...) asks two questions:
(1) What does the name spelled Jikel, Jichel, Ichel, or Juchel mean? (2) Is it possible that Chaye and Chaje are the same name? For (1), these are among the Yiddish variants corresponding to the Hebrew name Yechiel. There is a short article in Wikipedia about this name. For (2), Chaye and Chaje are very much the same name, which I see more commonly rendered as Chaya. In Russian speaking areas such as Lithuania, I've also seen the spelling Khaia.
