JRI Poland #Poland Looking for descendants of Ruchla Wielgolowski and Nuchim Pinkus Moskowicz #poland

Robert Tachna

A couple of years ago I was contacted by a researcher who told me that
he is a descendant of Ruchla Wielgolowski and her husband Nuchim Pinkus
Moskowicz and he was wanting to know if there was a family relation of
Ruchla Wielgolowski by her father Jakob Mosiek Wielgolowski to who he
suspected were Jakob Mosiek Wielgolowski's parents and Ruchla's
grandparent's Ruchle Tachna and Zalman Wielgolowski.

I wish I still had the name of that researcher as I now know for
fact that Ruchla (nee Wielgolowski) Moskowicz is a member of my
Tachna Family tree and that she is the granddaughter of Zalman and
Ruchle (nee Tachna) Wielgolowski.

I have a copy of Ruchla Wielgolowski and Nuchim Pinchus Moskowicz's
marriage record posted on the Tachna Family website at
http://www.tachna.com/Records_From_Poland/1891%20Ruchla%20Wielgolowski%20&%20Nuchim%20Pinkus%20Moskowicz.html

If that researcher is still out there I greatly wish to reacquire
contact with him and to start sharing information and also to start
solidifying our mutual family relationship.

Please contact me at my personal email of rhtachna@...

Thank you and hoping to hear >from you,
Robert Tachna

acclaimed novel is one of the most memorable films of recent time. What
starts out as an expedition to piece together one family's story under
the most absurd of circumstances turns into a surprisingly meaningful
journey with a powerful series of revelations – the importance of
remembrance, the perilous nature of secrets and the meaning of love and
friendship. Foer, during a summer vacation, went to Ukraine in search of
answers and found nothing. Schreiber lost a grandfather, his only link
to Judaism, who left Ukraine before World War I. The writer and the
filmmaker each uses his oeuvre to explore what connection “the Old
Country” has to their present life. They raise age-old questions that we
often ask in our ongoing search for Jewish identity and
self-understanding. Eric Goldman will explore the film along with the
questions of “post-memory” and the memory-site.

Eric A. Goldman, adjunct professor of cinema at Yeshiva University is the
founder and president of Ergo Media Inc., a New Jersey-based Jewish film
distributor. Dr. Goldman is also film reviewer for Northern New Jersey's
“The Jewish Standard.”

Dr. Goldman is a noted film educator and scholar of Yiddish, Israeli and
Jewish film. Former director of the National Jewish Media Service and
curator of film for the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, Eric was a
member of the Educational Advisory Committee of the USHMM. The
University of Texas Press published his new book, “The American Jewish
Story through the Cinema.”

I look forward to seeing you in Salt Lake City. Please keep in mind

Ukraine SIG Official Speaker at IAJGS conference: Dr. Eric Goldman #ukraine

Janette <janettes@...>

Dear Ukraine SIGgers:

I am really excited about this year's IAJGS Ukraine SIG speaker, Dr.
Eric Goldman. Eric will be speaking at a lunch with the experts and
have a session presentation. His session, entitled "Searching for a
Usable Path: Liev Schreiber's 'Everything Is Illuminated'" will be
about Liev Schreiber’s adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer’s critically
acclaimed novel is one of the most memorable films of recent time. What
starts out as an expedition to piece together one family's story under
the most absurd of circumstances turns into a surprisingly meaningful

Ukraine SIG #Ukraine RE: Adoption in Czarist Russia to escape conscription - need help! #ukraine

Supposedly, if your older sibling had been drafted, you were, at least
theoretically, exempt. But as it got harder to find Jews to draft, the
standards were less frequently followed.

My paternal great great grandfather, Chayim Mikhel, was born to Avraham and
his wife in 1824 in Bazaliya, Ukraine. Three years later, military
conscription for Jews was mandated, so - according to family lore - Avraham
arranged for the local VERBUKH family to legally adopt Chayim Mikhel to
avoid conscription. The results of recent DNA testing suggest that the
Verbukhs were not close relatives.

For many years, I have tried unsuccessfully to discover the correct family
line for Chayim Mikhel and his parents as adoption records, as well as any
earlier records, appear to have been destroyed. One family source stated
that Chayim Mikhel initially had the surname of HORNSTEIN - but this is
unconfirmed by any evidence.

I would love to trace my direct paternal line further back, but if I can't
do so, I would at least like to confirm the family story:

Did the legal adoption help to protect Chayim Mikhel >from conscription? If
so, does that mean he had at least one older (or younger) male sibling? Is
there a reference that explains how adoption was protective?

Any light that could be shed on this would be most appreciated.

Yizkor Book Project, March 2014 #usa

Lance Ackerfeld <lance.ackerfeld@...>

Shalom,

The Children of Israel ran out of time before their flight >from Egypt and we
at the Yizkor Book Project ran out of time trying to carry out all that we
planned during March. Strange comparison? True, but I did want to let you
know that we haven't been idle over the last month and also wanted to bring
up the subject of Pesach/Passover... So, I would like to take this
opportunity to wish all of you and your families an extremely enjoyable
Pesach holiday.

So what did we actually do during March? I'm pleased to let you know that
three new books were published during this last month through our Yizkor
Books in Print (YBIP) Project:

- Drahichyn, Belarus (Drohitchin Memorial (Yizkor) Book 500 years of Jewish
Life)
- Korczyna, Poland (Korczyna Memorial Book)
- Horodenka, Ukraine (Yizkor (Memorial) Book of Horodenka, Ukraine)

In addition, I have excellent news regarding the availability of new formats
for existing books. Apart >from a usual hard cover format, we have now added
a soft cover and e-book format for one of our existing books:

- Yampol, Ukraine (Yampol Memorial Book) and details of these new formats
and prices can be seen at http://www.jewishgen.org/Yizkor/ybip.html as well
as information on the other books we now have available.

Clearly, if these formats prove popular, we will consider preparing other
books these ways.

I do try, as much as possible, to regularly thank the hundreds of
volunteers who help us out in various aspects of the Yizkor Book and are
behind its success. We have an online list of more than 500 volunteers at:
http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/ and in this minor way we have endeavored to
let the world know of the important contributions of these wonderful people.
You would like to contribute? My "door" is always open to anyone wishing to
take some part in the YB Project.

Now to facts and figures for March.

During this last month we have added in 5 new projects:
