As many of you may know, JRI has produced scanned images of birth, marriage
and death records for several Polish towns. Eventually, JRI will have these images for all Polish towns. Part of the overall plan is to link JRI online search results with these images. In the case of Ciechanow, JRI already has these images available. They cover the period 1812 to 1912. To make these records accessible, associations need to be made between image numbers and actual AKT(record) numbers. The task itself is a simple one, making number entries into a spreadsheet. The project will require more than one volunteer. Please contact me personally if you want to find out more about this opportunity to assist. Hi everybody,
I'd like to tell you about the new article by Anna Aizic called "A secret Ulpan in the Communist Odessa". While most of our people stories tell us how Jews lived in Odessa in late 19th and early 20th century, this one shows us how lived those who stayed and lived in Communist and KGB's URSS after WWII. Anna is also finishing a book about his family story going >from Odessa to Israel and to the US. The current version of the book is downloadable >from the story page placed at the People Stories section of the kehilalinks. You can directly access the story at http://kehilalinks.jewishgen.org/odessa/sto_skulski.asp Enjoy. Ariel Parkansky Odessa Town Leader http://kehilalinks.jewishgen.org/odessa/

Ukraine SIG #Ukraine Welkoff
#ukraine
Gerner Thomsen <gerner.thomsen@...>
I have been told by some contributors that I should add more details to my
posting earlier this week about my great-grandmother and her connection to Welkoff. My great-grandmother was Jewish and came to Denmark around 1906 where she met and married a man >from Poland (Riwen Chilew Zismann, born in Lodz). I have uploaded a copy of the record >from the marriage protocol in Copenhagen 1911 to Viewmate. It's written in Danish, but I will translate the information about my great-grandmother: Selda Schliomova Rzesnikov, born in Welkoff 13/12 1890. Parents: Schliume Rzesnikov and wife (Teme?) in Bobrysk So obviously Selda was living in Bobrysk before she came to Denmark, but she is born in Welkoff, and I am interested to know where this town or village is located. There is much confusion about Selda's birthdate. In different censuses from Copenhagen it says that her birthdate is 14/11-1887, 14/11-1890 or 22/10-1888. I have not seen other spellings of Welkoff, but actually I have also seen it only one time (in the protocol for her marriage translated above). There is a another person called Perl (or sometimes Paula) living in Copenhagen who always has been regarded as a sister of Selda. However, when I checked more about this, I found that Paulas maiden surname was Katzmann, indicating that they could not have been sisters? However, since they lived close to each other in Denmark, and always regarded themselves as 'sisters', it sounds likely that they came >from the same region. Furthermore, I found a letter >from 1984, where a daughter to Paula tells a little about stories/memories that her mother told about their live and family in Russia. I'll try to quote some of the letter: "My mother told me that she came >from a happy family where they always were singing and playing. My mother could play the balalaika and dance Cossack dance." "My mother fled to Denmark around 1905 because they persecuted Jews and burned down their homes. She told that they caught Jews, beheaded them and cut off the breasts of women" "I was told that Paula was born in Kiev." Kiev is not mentioned in any documents I have seen, but since it's the capital of Ukraine I think it indicates that Ukraine is her home country. So maybe Welkoff is located in Ukraine, and later the family moved to Bobruisk? Also the Cossacks are connected with Ukraine, as far as I know? Having said that, if Paula not is Selda's sister, then this theory isn't worth much. As I said, I have no evidence that Selda and Paula came >from the same region, but the children of Selda and Paula (including my grandmother) always regarded themselves as cousins. It's all a little confusing. I have also uploaded some old photos to Viewmate. The 2 people in front is supposed to be Selda's parents in Russia (at different time periods). However, this information is not verified anywhere. The people in the background I am not sure about, probably Selda is among them. I don't have the original photos, and unfortunately I see no logo or stamps >from the photo shop. Any help that can proof my great-grandmother's birth and origin is highly appreciated. Thank you for responses so far. Best regards, Gerner

Hi, Craig
I've sent you a list of universities mentioned in a book published by the U.S. Dept. of Education in 1908 giving the names of Austrian universities and polytechnic schools ( Report of the Commissioner of Education for the year ending June 30, 1908, Volume 1- available on Google books). My grandfather attended Technische Lehranstalt Bodenbach (in Decin)
from 1924-27. He studied for an engineering degree, but left itunfinished. The only other Jewish student in his cohort was the son of a close collaborator of Rudolf Diesel. I don't know the surname, but the family held exclusive rights to the diesel engine in parts of eastern Europe. (Can anyone help with the name?) This other student was the outstanding scholar of the cohort, but he and my grandfather faced considerable anti-Semitic harassment >from classmates. My grandfather was raised in Ostrava, and had not previously experienced much of this sort of thing. Michael Gordy Maryland, USA
