Hello,
I am researching my husband's family SCHONBRUN >from Sombor in Serbia. 1) Has anyone obtained records >from the Sombor Archive? Do you know which archive holds the Jewish records >from pre-WWII ? 2) Can you recommend a guide / researcher for Sombor? 3) Do you know about the Sephardic history of the area? The family had surnames such as Elvira, Beno and Estaban, although they spoke Yiddish. Thank you kindly, Loren Greenberg Schonbrun Venice, California greenberg.loren@... |

Dear Friends,
As many of you know, the IAJGS recognized the KehilaLinks project for its "outstanding contribution to Jewish Genealogy" at the just completed conference in Boston. We are incredibly pleased that the project has been acknowledged, as we have considered it to be an incredibly useful resource since its inception in 1996. But we must also take a moment to formally acknowledge Susana Leistner Bloch and Barbara Ellman, the leaders of the KehilaLinks project. It is safe to say that the KehilaLinks project would be unrecognizable in its current form, without the countless hours of hard work, planning, brainstorming, and simple devotion that Susana and Barbara display on a constant basis. As anyone who has worked with them knows, they are constantly available to answer questions, and will do their best to help people be successful in their Jewish genealogical research. For this reason, we view this award not only as a "JewishGen award" but as a well deserved honor for two of our most important volunteers, Susana and Barbara. Please join us in congratulating Susana and Barbara by leaving your congratulatory comments on our facebook page by visiting: http://tinyurl.com/ktrqsu8 . Your comments will surely be appreciated. Dear SIGgenners,
Thanks to GERsig, we have already managed to contact several members of our family in Brazil, Holland and Israel. We would like now to find someone kind enough to make photos of tombs in the Jewish cemetery of Diez (Diez and der Lahn). According to: http://www.cjz-limburg.de/judische_friedhofe/Diez/diez.html the tombs of which we would like to have photos are on the 15th rank (Reihe 15) the tombs of Clara MEYER (1848-1909) and Eduard MEYER (1842-1898). These are the parents of our grandfather Otto MEYER. Thank you very much in advance Nicolas Grossfeld, Switzerland nicolas.grossfeld@... Please check out http://www.ushmm.org/museum/exhibit/focus/mantello/ if you're not familiar with the unauthorized visas issued by George Mantello, an employee of the El Salvador consulate in Geneva Switzerland during the war. It's wonderful story. Amazingly, some of the visas are addressed to residents in the camps. Hello-
Is there any information available on burials at the Old Jewish Cemetery in Frankfurt/aM? My only reference was a note >from my father (deceased) that his grandmother was buried there. Roots in Zagare
#latvia
Jo Ann Goldwater
Hello to everyone with roots in Zagare (and everyone else too!)
I am writing in response to Diane Sophrin's posting of Thurs. Aug 15, 2013 because her family probably had a similar history to mine. First of all, there are no records in existence >from Zagare before 1922. However I did get some good information >from the Latvian Historical Archives. I was surprised to see how much people moved in the 19th century, even if it was only 20 or 30 miles away. I was told that if the father was a tailor, and the son became a tailor, a small town didn't need two tailors, so the son would move to a neighbouring town. My paternal grandfather, Abba Goldwasser was born in Akmene, a few miles >from Zagare, then he moved to Zagare and later to Riga. I do not have any information as to the years the moves occurred. I do know that he and a brother left Riga in 1891 or 2, and went to Dublin where another brother lived for 15 years, and then moved to Port Elizabeth in 1896. Abba came to Montreal in 1893. There was a large community in Dublin who originated in Akmene, and there were many Litvaks who went to South Africa. I discovered that my grandfather had another brother who stayed in Riga and died in 1936. I realized that some of that family probably died in the Holocaust, so I went to Yad Vashem and I traced some descendants because someone had filled in a page of testimony for the relatives who died. Some Jews >from Zagare, and the area, were exiled to Russia in 1915, and that is how those descendants survived. They lived in Nizny Novogorod and immigrated to Israel several years ago, and I have been in touch with them. My grandmother, Bertha Kagan (Goldwasser), was born in Zagare, but her family moved to Riga when she was very little, maybe three or four, and she always said that she was >from Riga. When my grandparents were born, ca 1865-1870, Akmene and Zagare were in Courland, a province of Russia. Many immigrants at the time just said that they were >from Russia. It took me quite a while to find out the actual town that they were from. I discovered this when I found the Canadian naturalization papers for one of my father's first cousins that said he was born in Schgarren, which is the Russian name for Zagare. Then all the pieces began to fit together. Diane, I looked at your photo on Viewmate and it is great. (24539 and 24538 in the ViewMate archives) Good luck to everyone with their research, and thanks to all those who have responded to my e-mail asking for information about Zagare. I hope this may help some of you. Shana Tova, Jo Ann Goldwater, Montreal Researching GOLDWASSER, KAGAN, SARON, ABRAHAMS >from Akmene, Zagare, and Riga. |
