Dear Geners
I share with you 2 articles that I recently wrote. I hope they will give encouragement and inspiration on how our research can lead to much more than merely discovering names and dates of our ancestors. The first was published and posted by the Israel Genealogy Research Association (IGRA), entitled, Discovering our Past: The Good, the Bad and the Sweet. http://genealogy.org.il/2013/03/18/discovering-our-past-the-good-the-bad-and-the-sweet-by-michael-salzbank/ [Moderator Note: Shortened URL - http://goo.gl/SCnDe ] The second was just printed in the Queens Jewish Link (a local free newspaper), entitled "Treasures in the Attic". http://issuu.com/queensjewishlink/docs/qjl_97_low?mode=window&pageNumber=1 Chag Kasher V'Sameach Michael Salzbank |

Latvia SIG #Latvia Searching for Info on JACOBSON Grandparents

Hello,
I am new to the list and am hoping someone might have a bit of information to help me with my puzzle. My Jacobson great-great grandparents were Rachel Freidman (Freedman, Freydman) and Samson JACOBSON. I have one document listing them has having been born in Poland (I have no idea where) but I know they lived in Jaunjelgava (Friedrichstadt) as most of their family was born there. On the other side, my great-great grandparents were Nissan Wulfov and Malka Abramovna GRUZIN. I have no maiden name for Malka but I am pretty sure she was born in Glazmanka (Gostini). Nissan's parents were Wulf Leibov Gruzin and Basya (Gruzinwife) and they were both born in Kreitzburg (Krus). Can any one help shed some light? Thank you very much, Coral Grant Sooke, BC, Canada |

Sephardic SIG #Sephardim Ladino: Los Barros, Los Patas

Jeanne Gold <family@...>
I'm looking for a contextual translation of two words. In Monastir (now
Bitola, Macedonia), there were two families with the surname, Camhi. They differentiated themselves by the appellate, "Los Barros" and "Los Patas". Online translators have translated these two words to mean "The Muds" and "The Legs" and that sounds odd to me. I'm wondering, since these were Ladino speaking families, if their might be a different meaning for the terms. If you are interested, I posted some information about the family back in 2000: http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.camhi/1/mb.ashx Thank you for any suggestions you may have.
