Thank you for reminding me of the salty delicious olives. My Romanian born
mother called them (what sounded like to me as) maslinits. Hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving...(at which I served my mother's recipe for chopped eggplant as hors d'oevres.) Diana Weinman Monroe Twp., NJ |

I followed the paper trail for Levy FREUND, who I'm hoping to find a
relationship to in my FREUND/LAZARUS family (other than marriage). I followed him in the census and other documents >from 1880-1920. from 1880-1910 he was head of household. In 1920 he was living with hisdaughter and son-in-law. In 1925, he's an inmate in the Hebrew Orphan Asylum. He's 75 years old and all the other inmates are adults as well. I thought the Hebrew Orphan Asylum was an orphange for children. Why were all these adults, mostly elderly, incarcerated there? What kind of institution was it? He had many children, and I know some were still living. How and why did he end up in an orphanage? Does anyone know the background of this place? He died in 1928. I'm planning on getting the death certificate. Thank you. Jewish Connections of Alexandre Dumas

Ann Rabinowitz
I've been reading a new book out entitled "The Black Count: Glory, Revolution,
Betrayal, and the Real Count of Monte Cristo" by Tom Reiss. It is about the black heritage of French writer Alexandre Dumas, Pere, author of the "Count of Monte Cristo" and "The Three Musketeers", but mentions a Jewish connection through the marriage of his granddaughter, Marie-Alexandrine-Henriette Dumas, to Maurice Lippmann, a wealthy banker, whom she divorced. Their son, Alexandre Lippmann, was known as an Olympic star epee fencer and Jewish athelete as he participated in three Olympiads. Upon further research, the Lippmann family has quite interesting connections to other well-known Jewish families. Maurice Lippmann's parents were August Lippmann and Frederike Konigswarter, who was the daughter of Moritz Konigswarter and Cacilie Wertheimer (daughter of Phillip Wertheimer). All of these influential in German, Austrian and French banking circles. Maurice's sister was Leontine Lippmann, who took another track as she married Frenchman Albert Arman de Caillevet. She later became famous for the literary salon she sponsored in her home, but more as the mistress of noted French writer Anatole France and as a staunch supporter of Alfred Dreyfus. Leontine's son Gaston Arman de Caillavet, a writer, married Jean Pouquet whilst Gaston's daughter Simone Andre de Caillevet, also a writer, married French writer Andre Maurois. It is always amazing how one can be reading something totally apart >from Jewish genealogy and it leads there just the same. Ann Rabinowitz annrab@... |

Now that genealogists have a full round of U.S. Census record up to 1940
and other immigration and naturalization records too, it is sometimes possible to find connections to very tiny shtetls in Lithuania. As is usual for me, I am always looking for connections to Kupiskis, my ancestral shtetl, and it so happened that someone asked me about the KRAM or KROM family >from there. In looking through various records, I happened upon a TRAUB family who married into the KROM family and they were >from a place called Radeikiai which was actually mentioned in a record. Where on earth was Radeikiai as I was not familiar with it? Upon looking it up on Google Maps, it appeared to be a tiny speck of nothing in the Utena District of Kovno Guberniya. It was actually 10km >from Utena. However, it was mentioned briefly in Pinkas Hakehillot: http://www.jewishgen.org/yizkor/pinkas_lita/lit_00628a.html as having about twelve Jewish families. So, it was quite tiny. There was also mention of the =0AJews >from there being killed during the Holocaust in the Rashe Forest near Utena at: http://www.iajgsjewishcemeteryproject.org/lithuania/skiemonys.html and http://www.blankgenealogy.com/histories/Location%20histories/Lithuania /Utena%20Lithuania.pdf You can even find a virtual tour of present day Radeikiai at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DpW6tyYItR90 And lastly, there were thirty-six records in the ALD for the town, including records for the KROM and TRAUB and their related families. So, even the most tiny place may have something to say for itself. Ann Rabinowitz annrab@... |
